Salvation Army Week, December 11-17, 2023Whereas: The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental provider of social services in Canada, providing food, clothing, and shelter in St. John’s and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador; |

Economic Abuse Awareness Day, November 26, 2023Whereas: Domestic Economic Abuse is a common but overlooked form of domestic violence that limits an individual’s financial autonomy, including denying access and control over resources or constraining economic freedom;
Whereas: barriers to economic resources undermine a survivor’s independence, including the ability to flee abusive relationships. Economic Abuse has detrimental effects on a survivor’s mental and physical well-being and other social determinants of health.
Whereas: Economic Abuse happens across socio-economic status, race, and age and is exacerbated by intersectional and systemic factors.
Whereas: Economic Abuse survivors have the right to be free from violence and must feel empowered to regain control over their lives;
Whereas: all levels of government must work to prevent Economic Abuse and Whereas: the City of St. John’s commits to supporting victim-survivors of Economic Abuse and encourages everyone to inform themselves about the signs and impacts of Economic Abuse.
Therefore, I, Danny Breen, Mayor for the City of St. John’s, hereby proclaim November 26, 2023, as “Economic Abuse Awareness Day” in the City of St. John’s. National Housing Day, November 22, 2023WHEREAS: Since 1998, municipalities and other organizations across the nation have recognized National Housing Day on November 22nd. National Housing Day recognizes that having a safe, secure home is a basic human right and a key pathway out of poverty. It is important for all levels of government, organizations, and communities to work together to provide affordable and adequate housing that will make a real difference in the lives of many people who require shelter; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s has adopted a ten-year Affordable Housing Strategy to create solutions across the housing continuum. The strategy was developed and is being led by the Affordable Housing Working Group which includes representation from all levels of government, the community sector, and private industry; and WHEREAS: Communities across Canada are experiencing an affordable housing crisis that has highlighted systemic affordability issues and is exacerbated by broader economic turbulence; and WHEREAS: National Housing Day is meant to raise awareness about housing and homelessness and encourage events designed to focus on the needs of individual communities. This year a forum has been planned; and WHEREAS: This event will work towards building capacity across the housing sector so that our community can bring together its resources in responding to the housing supply crisis; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 22, 2023, as National Housing Day in the City of St. John’s. National Child Day, November 20, 2023WHEREAS: November 20, 2023, is recognized in Canada as National Child Day and internationally as World Children’s Day to commemorate the Convention on the Rights of the Children. It’s a special day to celebrate the rights of children everywhere, to help them live happy, healthy lives so that each child may reach their full potential; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s Recreation Division has celebrated National Child Day for over 20 years and would like to continue to bring awareness of the rights of children in our community and abroad; and WHEREAS: In recognition of National Child Day, the Meet the Mayor contest was one of the activities that enables a student from the City’s Elementary schools an opportunity to meet the Mayor and attend the Council meeting here today. Other activities will be held throughout the week to celebrate. Visit the City’s Calendar of Events at www.stjohns.ca for more information; and WHEREAS: In recognition of National Child Day/World Children’s Day, all citizens are encouraged to wear blue on November 20 and to use the hashtag #NationalChildDay on social media to bring awareness of children’s rights around the world. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 20, 2023, as National Child Day in the City of St. John’s. World Town Planning Day; November 8, 2023WHEREAS: November 8th has been celebrated as World Town Planning Day since 1949; and Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness MonthWHEREAS Crohn’s and Colitis Canada is a national, volunteer-based, non-profit organization supporting more than 322,000 Canadians living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, chronic autoimmune diseases that causes the body to attack healthy tissue, leading to inflammation of part of or all of the digestive system;
Indigenous Disability Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Métis) Peoples across Canada experience a disability rate higher than Canada’s non-Indigenous population and often face unique barriers and discrimination that impact their ability to fully participate in the social and economic opportunities available within our city and province; and

International Credit Union Day; October 19, 2023
WHEREAS: Credit unions are financial cooperatives, democratically owned and operated, and founded by people working together toward economic advancement; and
WHEREAS: Credit unions embrace a “people helping people” philosophy through the pooling of personal resources and leadership abilities for the good of the cooperative, empowering members to improve their financial futures and uniting to help those in need; and
WHEREAS: Credit unions empower people to improve their economic situations in 118 nations around the world at more than 87,000 credit unions that serve the financial needs of the 393 million members, including more than 20,000 NLCU members in Newfoundland and Labrador; and
WHEREAS: Credit unions are developing strong alliances that make financial democracy possible in many countries throughout the world.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 19, 2023, as International Credit Union Day in the City of St. John’s. World Homeless Day 2023; October 10, 2023WHEREAS: World Homeless Day is recognized internationally every year on October 10; and WHEREAS: the Lived and Living Experience Council (LEC) with End Homelessness St. John’s seeks to increase awareness of and inform solutions to homelessness in St. John’s; and WHEREAS: the LEC will hold a “Homelessness Awareness” resource fair on October 10, acknowledging the ongoing increase in sheltered and unsheltered homelessness in St. John’s; and WHEREAS: aligned with World Homeless Day, we hope to “draw attention to the needs of people who experience homelessness locally, provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness,” and commit to including the voices of individuals with lived and living experience in all solutions to end homelessness. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2023, as World Homeless Day in the City of St. John’s. Child Abuse Prevention MonthWHEREAS: Children are the foundation for a prosperous and innovative society, and the foundation for a child’s growth and development is established when the community takes responsibility for creating health environments where our children can thrive; and
WHERAS: All children deserve to have a safe, stable, nurturing home and community to foster their heathy growth and development; and
WHEREAS: Child abuse and neglect is an important societal concern that may affect the long-term health and well-being of not only children, but also the adults they become; and
WHEREAS: Child abuse and neglect impacts our entire society and our society’s future; and
WHEREAS: Child abuse prevention is a shared responsibility and finding solutions requires the involvement and collaboration of citizens, organizations and government entities; and
WHEREAS: this month, we emphasize the importance of understanding the devastating problem of child abuse and neglect and commit to learn more about the behavioral and physical signs of possible abuse.
THEREFORE: I, Danny Breen, Mayor of the City of St. John’s, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2023 to be National Child Abuse Prevention Month in the City of St. John’s and urge all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come. Circular Economy Month
WHEREAS: We commit to waste reduction, resource conservation, and community education for sustainable living; and
WHEREAS: We recognize that losing waste to disposal and as litter are local and global threats to the environment; and
WHEREAS: We will take action to reduce our waste and support the circular economy.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 1–31, 2023, as Circular Economy Month in the City of St. John’s. International Walk & Wheel to School MonthWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that October is International Walk & Wheel to School Month (iWALK-iWHEEL) and Active Transportation Month. iWALK-iWHEEL gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of active transportation; and
Disability Employment Awareness MonthWHEREAS: A strong workforce is one, inclusive of the skills and talents of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians; and WHEREAS: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with disabilities constitute a growing population and experience issues which require positive change; including disproportionate unemployment, poverty, and labour market exclusion; and WHEREAS: The employment inclusion of people with disabilities benefits all of our citizens; and WHEREAS: The awareness of said benefits and the innumerable success stories of employment inclusion serve to positively promote inclusion of people with disabilities in the provincial workforce; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s is committed in our work to increase employment inclusion for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians through the provision of leadership, resources, and ongoing opportunities for dialogue and engagement. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 2023 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. National Seniors’ Day and United Nations International Day of Older Persons; October 2, 2023WHEREAS: Communities across Canada have joined together on October 1 to recognize National Seniors Day and the United Nations International Day of Older Persons; and
National Breastfeeding Week; October 1–7, 2023WHEREAS: Breastfeeding is recommended for optimal nutrition and healthy growth and development in the early months and years of life, is fundamental to the well-being and prosperity of communities, and is one of the most cost-effective prevention strategies for many infections and chronic and acute diseases; and WHEREAS: Breastfeeding has an impact on lifelong health, with exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding for two years and beyond, ensuring that mothers and children receive maximum health benefits; and WHEREAS: Breastfeeding is one of the most important decisions that a new family makes—parents need the support of family, friends, Government and Health authorities, municipalities, community groups and organizations, businesses, and employers; and WHEREAS: National Breastfeeding Week provides an opportunity for people to celebrate and to raise public awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and the role everyone can play in normalizing breastfeeding; and WHEREAS: The theme for National Breastfeeding Week 2023 is “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a difference for working parents”. The theme focuses on the impact of paid leave and workplace support on the duration of breastfeeding and the positive impacts for parents, children, and families. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 1–7, 2023, as National Breastfeeding Week in the City of St. John’s. Wrongful Conviction Day; October 2, 2023WHEREAS: the loss of one’s freedom due to a wrongful conviction has far-reaching and devastating consequences which not only affects the innocent individual’s life, but also affects the quality of life of their families and has a harmful effect on society as a whole; and WHEREAS: wrongful convictions question the integrity and fairness of the criminal justice system; and, unless corrected, undermines society's trust in their criminal justice system; and WHEREAS: Wrongful Conviction Day is a global movement dedicated to advocating for innocent individuals who have been wrongly convicted of a crime they did not commit. The implementation and recognition of this day is the start to reaching a broader audience regarding the importance surrounding miscarriages of justice; and WHEREAS: A proclamation will assist to advocate, educate, and create awareness around those miscarriages of justice in hope for reform to minimize the effect it could have on another individual. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2023, as Wrongful Conviction Day in the City of St. John’s. Fire Prevention Week; October 8–14, 2023WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our City. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk to fire; and |

Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day
WHEREAS: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases affecting approximately 1 in 400 to 1 in 1,000 people. Today, approximately 66,000 Canadians and millions of people worldwide live with PKD; and
National Tree Day 2023; September 20, 2023WHEREAS: on September 20th, the city of St. John’s proposed that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. The celebration, declared National Tree Day, will be recognized by the planting of trees in St. John’s; and
Welcoming Week; September 8-17, 2023WHEREAS: September 8-17, 2023, is Welcoming Week for Newcomers in Canada; and
National Forest Week 2023; September 17-23, 2023WHEREAS: Canada’s forests are a valuable, renewable resource that contribute to our economy and the livelihoods of our communities; and
Energy Efficiency Week; September 23–29, 2023WHEREAS: takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro aimed at creating energy efficiency awareness and delivering programs that promote electricity savings to the residents of this province; and
Arthritis Awareness Month
WHEREAS: Community support has been critical throughout the Arthritis Society Canada’s 75-year history, enabling the organization to fulfill its mission to fight the fire of arthritis with cutting-edge research, bold innovation, fiery advocacy, and evidence-based information and patient-centered support; and
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; September 2023WHEREAS: September is recognized around the world as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month
WHEREAS: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is a lifelong disability. Individuals with FASD will experience some degree of challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills to reach their full potential. Each individual with FASD is unique and has areas of both strengths and challenges’; and

Chinese Peoples’ Railroad DayWHEREAS: 17,000 Chinese pioneers were recruited to Canada in the 1880s to help build the transcontinental railroad. The railway united Canada from coast to coast and laid the foundation for economic and industrial prosperity; and

National Deafblind Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Deafblindness is a unique disability that incorporates the loss of both sight and hearing. Individuals who are deafblind can live full, meaningful lives as independently as possible with the right supports in place, such as intervenor services; and
Brain Injury Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Brain injury continues to be the number one disabler and killer of those under 40 years of age; and
Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) Awareness WeekWHEREAS: Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, non-communicable, debilitating inflammatory skin disease, characterized by painful skin lesions, for which there is no known cure; and
World Kidney Cancer DayWHEREAS: The International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC) has declared Thursday, June 15, 2023, to be World Kidney Cancer Day; and
Longest Day of SMILES®WHEREAS: Operation Smile Canada is a global medical charity providing free, life-changing surgeries and medical care to children born with cleft conditions around the world; and
World Refugee DayWHEREAS: World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on June 20 and recognizes the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. For 2023 World Refugee Day focuses on solutions for refugees and the power of inclusion; and
Indigenous Survivors’ DayWHEREAS: City Council recognizes the historical injustices endured by Indigenous peoples due to colonization, forced assimilation, and systemic injustices; and

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Awareness MonthWHEREAS: The Month of May, has been internationally designated as "GBS and CIDP Awareness Month" to educate the public and to focus attention on Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), rare, paralyzing and potentially catastrophic disorders of the peripheral nerves; and
Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness MonthWHEREAS: It is imperative that communities across Canada be reminded of the importance of sun safety; and
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable, often disabling, demyelinating neurological disease affecting an estimated 100,000 Canadians as well as their families, friends, and employers; and
Provincial Francophonie MonthWHEREAS: the month of May has been declared provincially, the month of the provincial Francophonie, to mark the 50th anniversary of the provincial and St. John’s associative movement; and
Recreation MonthWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that recreation enhances quality of life, active living and lifelong learning, helps people to live happier and longer, develops creativity, and builds healthy bodies and positive lifestyles; and
Heart Failure Awareness WeekWHEREAS: over 750,000 people of all ages in Canada are living with heart failure, and heart failure is expected to cost the Canadian economy $2.8 billion per year by 2030; and
Youth WeekWHEREAS: There is an increasing interest in intentional youth development through recreation in Canada that is founded on a substantial and growing body of research to support the role of recreation in the positive development of youth; and
Early Childhood Educators’ Week 2023WHEREAS: The Association of Early Childhood Educators of Newfoundland and Labrador represents those working in child care and related fields throughout the province; and
Pick it Up for YYT DayWHEREAS: Clean St. John’s exists as a community-based organization dedicated to promoting the involvement of all St. John’s citizens in environmental stewardship; and
World Press Freedom DayWHEREAS: a healthy, professional news media is essential for the proper functioning of civil society and democracy at the local, regional, federal and international levels, and
World Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) DayWHEREAS: Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a rare but very complex and serious lung disease, which is progressive and potentially fatal. PH is defined by high blood pressure in the lungs, which leads to enlargement and weakness of the right side of the heart-a serious type of heart failure. PH can strike people of all backgrounds, ages, and genders; and
Moose Hide Campaign DayWHEREAS: the Moose Hide Campaign an Indigenous-led grassroots movement of men, boys, and all Canadians - standing up to end violence against women and children; and

World Schizophrenia Awareness DayWHEREAS: Approximately 2,000 people are living with Schizophrenia in St. John’s, each with family and friends who are also deeply affected by the illness; and
Menstrual Health DayWHEREAS: This day highlights the importance of menstrual equity and public education that advocates for equitable access to proper menstrual hygiene; and

World Parkinson’s Awareness MonthWHEREAS: April 11 is a day to mark World Parkinson’s Awareness Day and to raise awareness for Parkinson's Disease (PD), a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Some medications help with symptoms, but to date, there is no cure, and for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, no hope; and WHEREAS: Over 110,000 people live with PD in Canada, and over 25 people are diagnosed daily. The month of April aims to help Canadians understand the reality of PD and to demonstrate our support to those living with PD and their families. Unfortunately, 1 in 37 people alive today will be diagnosed with Parkinson's in their lifetime. Parkinson's Disease doesn't discriminate by race, economic level, or region; and WHEREAS: Currently, those with PD and their families are struggling with this reality. However, we cannot ignore Parkinson's Disease. Recognition that April is Parkinson's Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity to educate the public about Parkinson's Disease and its impact on our families and community; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2023 as World Parkinson’s Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s.
National Poetry MonthWHEREAS: we value poetry for its continual reinvigoration of language, its ability to teach old ideas new tricks, and its capacity to help us see the world anew and more fully understand the human experience; and WHEREAS: St. John’s is home to many poets and several publishers of poetry, and these individuals and businesses have local, national, and international significance and make both cultural and economic contributions to our city; and WHEREAS: 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of National Poetry Month in Canada—this year with the theme of “joy”; and WHEREAS: the League of Canadian Poets challenges everyone to find opportunities to celebrate poetry and literature throughout April; and WHEREAS: this challenge is supported locally by Writers NL; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2023 as National Poetry Month in the City of St. John’s.
National Volunteer WeekWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes the enormous contribution that volunteers and community organizations make to the social, cultural, and economic development of our province; and WHEREAS: It has been recognized that volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador have a significant and positive impact on the quality of life for our citizens; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s acknowledges the theme “VOLUNTEERING WEAVES US TOGETHER” for Volunteer Week 2023, and recognizes the many people who contribute to our city by volunteering. THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 16 to 22, 2023, as Volunteer Week in the City of St. John’s.
World Primary Immunodeficiency WeekWHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada’s vision is that all Canadians with immunodeficiency disorders have access to the resources they need to thrive, works with patient families and caregivers as well as healthcare professionals, and empowers people impacted by immunodeficiency disorders to live well through education, support, advocacy, community-building, and research; and WHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada provides both national as well as regional/provincial services related to immunodeficiency including education, support, advocacy, and research to thousands of patients; and WHEREAS: ImmUnity Canada will unite its supporters across Canada during World Primary Immunodeficiency Week; and WHEREAS: The walk will amplify the voice of patients and those who support them to share why it is so important that people understand their needs, and the implications of not respecting or upholding our rights as individuals and as patients with a rare disease; and WHEREAS: The goal is to increase the awareness and advocacy in support of the Primary Immunodeficiency population in our city and across Canada; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 22 to 29, 2023 as World Primary Immunodeficiency Week in the City of St. John’s.
National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness WeekWHEREAS: The Canadian Transplant Association (CTA) was created in 1987 to raise awareness about organ donation and celebrate the success of transplants in saving lives; and WHEREAS: Members of the CTA consist of transplant recipients, athletes, and volunteers dedicated to promoting organ and tissue transplants, and providing support networks to donors and recipients; and WHEREAS: last year in Canada, there were 4500 Canadians awaiting a lifesaving organ transplant; and WHEREAS: 75 people could receive tissue from one donor; and WHEREAS: one organ and tissue donor can save up to eight lives and enhance as many as 75; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 24 to 30, 2023, as National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week in the City of St. John’s.
World Autism Awareness DayWHEREAS: World Autism Awareness Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly and is acknowledged annually on April 2. The Autism Society, Newfoundland & Labrador (ASNL) continuously works to center Autistic voices and support individuals and families not only on April 2 but every day; and WHEREAS: Autism is a Neurotype and part of the range of natural variation in human neurological development. Human beings have a diverse range of Neurotypes — “Neuro” meaning brain. This diversity in human neurotype is what we call “Neurodiversity”; and WHEREAS Neurodiversity (“Brain Diversity”) is a part of nature’s normal biodiversity. This biodiversity ensures all species have healthy ecosystems to thrive in. Autism is a Neuro (“brain”) developmental (“process of developing”) difference and may therefore be on a different developmental timeline. Autistics may avail of supports in different areas at different times in their life across their lifespan; and WHEREAS: One in 45 Newfoundland and Labrador children and youth, ages 5 thru 17 are diagnosed with autism. (Public Health Agency of Canada/Information not available for adult-age individuals); and WHEREAS: Autism Society, Newfoundland & Labrador is dedicated to promoting the development of individual, lifelong, and community-based support and services for autistic people and continuously works to promote acceptance of neurodiversity through listening, actioning, and advocacy; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 2, 2023, as World Autism Awareness Day in the City of St. John’s.
Green Shirt DayWHEREAS: After the devastating events of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash that took the lives of sixteen passengers, Humboldt Broncos defenseman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries April 7th; and WHEREAS: Logan’s parents Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on; and WHEREAS: Logan had registered as an organ donor, after being inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt who was also an organ donor and saved six lives when he passed in 2017; and WHEREAS: as news spread of the organ donation by this young hockey player, it is estimated that almost 150,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian history due to one event; and WHEREAS: Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of the fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2023, as Green Shirt Day in the City of St. John’s. I encourage all citizens to wear green, register their decision to become organ and tissue donors, and share that decision with their family.
Parental Alienation Awareness/Bubbles Love DayWHEREAS: Parental Alienation deprives children of their right to love and be loved by their whole family and it is very damaging to children; and WHEREAS: behaviors such as speaking negatively about a parent to, or in front of, a child can destroy the bond between a loving parent and child; and WHEREAS: awareness to this issue creates education and understanding to better the lives of the children in our community; and WHEREAS: April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Parental Alienation is considered a form of child psychological abuse; and WHEREAS: this year is the 2023 annual Parental Alienation Awareness Day, and the caring citizens of our community will gather together and join others around the world to blow Bubbles of Love to symbolize that "As bubbles flow freely, so should the natural love that a child has for both parents and both sides of their family;" THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim April 25, 2023, as Parental Alienation Awareness Day & Bubbles of Love Day in the City of St. John’s. |

Black History MonthWHEREAS: Black History Month is an internationally recognized annual celebration designed to highlight and recognize the actions, achievements and contributions of Black people around the world. WHEREAS: We currently live on unceded Indigenous territory, and Black Lives Matter NL knows that as there is no Black liberation on stolen land; and WHEREAS: Black Lives Matter NL asks the City of St. John’s to recognize and strengthen the historical relationships between Indigenous Peoples and the Black community; and WHEREAS: Black people have been a part of Canada, since the early 1600’s, and have contributed to the country’s and province’s growth, despite the presence of systemic anti-Black racism and other forms of systemic oppression; WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes the significant cultural, social, political and economic contributions that Black people continue to make to the City of St. John’s and across the province. WHEREAS: Black Lives Matter NL is a non-profit organization that fights against anti-Black racism, supports the Black community of Newfoundland and Labrador, fosters Black-centric networks, and works towards liberation from all state-sanctioned forms of oppression, injustice violence and brutality against vulnerable and marginalized communities; and WHEREAS: We ask that The City of St. John’s and community partners of BLMNL pledge to host inclusive events and activities which focus on celebrating Black peoples within the province in the month of February and throughout the year; and WHEREAS: BLMNL also pledges to host online events, such as ‘Coils, Curls and Conversations: Redefining Our Standards of Beauty’ designed to celebrate the multiplicity of Black people and cultures in NL, as well as educate and create awareness about racism, colourism and texturism; and WHEREAS: The City recognizes that proclaiming February as Black History Month is only one small step in the long journey towards dismantling systemic racism and oppression of Black people and other marginalized groups in our community, and thus The City of St. John’s commits to take more steps towards this goal; and THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February as Black History Month in the City of St. John’s. Violence Prevention MonthWHEREAS: the Violence Prevention Initiative of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is based on a vision that the people of our province will live in safe, caring communities, where there is an inherent respect for each other, and violence of any sort is unacceptable; and WHEREAS: the solution to eradicating violence against those most at risk in our society—women, children, and youth, Aboriginal women and children, persons with disabilities, older persons, and others who are victims of violence because of ethnicity, sexual orientation, or economic status—is through a collaborative effort between the Provincial Government and the community to improve services and to educate all residents of our province about violence prevention; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s, with its community partners has been working to improve services to victims of violence and violence prevention programs for many years; and, WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s promotes self-reliant, healthy, educated individuals and families living in safe, nurturing communities; and WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s has made a commitment to partner with the community to seek long-term solutions to violence; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February as Violence Prevention Month in the City of St. John’s, February 6, 2023.
Eating Disorders Awareness WeekWHEREAS: An Eating Disorder is a serious mental illness with often devastating physical implications; and WHEREAS: Eating Disorders affect many individuals and families in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: Recovery from an eating disorder is a journey that includes support from families and caregivers; and WHEREAS: The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador is the leading advocacy group dedicated to promoting support, treatment services, and providing public support services and information about matters related to eating disorders throughout the province; and WHEREAS: February 1–7, 2023, is dedicated across Newfoundland and Labrador and the entire country as a special time when many educational and awareness activities take place to help raise the level of understanding of Eating Disorder Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery; and WHEREAS: The theme for Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023 is “Transforming the Narrative from Asks to Action”; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2023 as Eating Disorders Awareness Week in the City of St. John’s. International Walk and Wheel to School DayWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that February is International Winter Walk and Wheel to School month (iWALK-iWHEEL). iWALK-iWHEEL gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of active transportation; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s Recreation Division has celebrated iWALK-iWHEEL for 13 years, and would like to continue to bring awareness to this event in our community; and WHEREAS: In recognition of iWALK-iWHEEL 2023, the City of St. John’s is encouraging all students in St. John’s to participate by walking or wheeling to school on February first . The City of St. John’s is supporting this initiative by encouraging schools to host school walks and providing brochures containing safe walking tips to distribute to students, and resource packages for teachers to encourage walking and wheeling to school. Furthermore, City of St. John’s After School Programs are participating by providing participants with the opportunity to walk and wheel after school; and WHEREAS: By walking and wheeling to and from school, students can experience firsthand how easy it is to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2023 as International Walk & Wheel to School Day in the City of St. John’s. International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital MutilationWHEREAS International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an opportunity to honour everyone— including women, girls, boys, men and gender diverse people—who is actively and courageously working towards an end to this harmful practice, and WHEREAS 4.1 million girls are still at risk of mutilation each year, including girls in Canada, and WHEREAS female genital mutilation (FGM) is an issue in more than 90 countries on every continent except Antarctica, and there are at least 200 million FGM survivors in the world, including an estimated 100,000 or more survivors in Canada, and WHEREAS FGM has no benefits and causes only harm, including death, difficulties with urination, menstruation and sexual intimacy; post-traumatic stress disorder, gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia and increased maternal and child mortality—and is recognized by the United Nations and other global organizations as child abuse and an abuse of a girl’s fundamental human rights, and WHEREAS International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate all national and international efforts, especially grassroots efforts, to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which calls for the elimination of FGM and other harmful practices by 2030, and WHEREAS the city of St. John’s, in the Province of Newfoundland Labrador supports the human rights of women and girls so they can live a life free from the violence that is female genital mutilation; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that February 6, 2023, shall be known as International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
Wear Red Canada DayWHEREAS: Heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide and the leading cause of premature death for Canadian women, a fact unknown to many women and their healthcare providers; and WHEREAS: The Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance is an organization of volunteer health professionals and patients working hard to improve women’s heart health; and WHEREAS: Wear Red Canada Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness for all Canadians, but especially Canadian women, to be mindful, curious, and proactive in the management of their heart health and wellness; and WHEREAS: We want to see better prevention, diagnosis, and care and fewer women dying prematurely from heart disease; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February, 13, 2023 Wear Red Canada Day in the City of St. John’s. Heritage Day and WeekWHEREAS: The third Monday in February is recognized nationally as Heritage Day; and WHEREAS: Heritage Day and Heritage Week are a time to reflect on the achievements of past generations and to accept responsibility for protecting our heritage; and WHEREAS: Our citizens should be encouraged to celebrate Newfoundland and Labrador’s uniqueness and to rejoice in our heritage and environment; and WHEREAS: In 2023 the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador will celebrate our rich and diverse heritage; THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim February 20, 2023 as Heritage Day and February 20th-26th as Heritage Week in the City of St. John’s, and call upon all citizens to celebrate the richness of our past and the promise of our future.
