Capital Construction Projects

Each year Council allocates funds for various capital works projects to improve the City's infrastructure.

City staff prepare proposals for Council's approval. We fund annual projects from the capital out of revenue budget. Multi-year capital works projects are usually cost-shared with other levels of government. Council approves the budget early in the year with projects taking place throughout the construction season.

St. John's has a 10-year capital works plan, presented in 2015.

Annual plans are announced in March.

Capital out of revenue

In the City's annual budget, capital investments are smaller and are generally “one-time” in nature.  These projects range in size and include things like:

• bridge repair
• building maintenance and repair
• road maintenance
• playground construction
• parks improvements

Multi-year capital works

Multi-year capital works include projects like:

• community centres
• new parks
• underground infrastructure replacement (storm and sanitary sewers or water mains)
