Effective organizations continuously look at what they do and how they do it. This helps ensure they are performing effectively and achieving results.
The City of St. John's invests in continuous improvement (CI). We check our service delivery processes to identify and remove inefficiencies or waste. The goal is to make processes more efficient and in turn to deliver more value to the citizen.
Since 2017, the City of St. John's has been building a culture of continuous improvement as part of our core value to continue to do things better, every day. We focus on awareness and training, projects, tools, methodology and governance and metrics.
To ensure the City's CI journey is implemented in the best way possible, we have an internal steering committee and community of practice. Additionally, a roadmap for how to embed CI into the City's culture was developed and is being implemented.
A CI project is a focused effort to identify the root cause of inefficiencies in a process and develop solutions for improvement. We continuously identify opportunities for CI projects. Each opportunity is assessed according to its potential to provide efficiencies in cost, capacity and turn-around time. Opportunities with the most potential for improvement become CI projects.
Each project brings together a cross-departmental team of employees. They apply CI tools and methods to identify and remove inefficiencies. Learn more about current and completed projects in these reports on our continuous improvement efforts.
