Each year, the City of St. John's provides over $1.7 million in funding through its Community Grant Program. Applications open in late October and are due before 4 p.m. on the last Friday of November.

Capital grants support non-profit groups and organizations seeking financial assistance for the construction, expansion or renovation of a facility. The facility must meet a demonstrated need in the areas of recreation, culture or other community service.

The Building Safer Communities Grant Programs provides funding to community-based service providers to develop or strengthen crime and violence prevention and intervention initiatives or programs for children, youth, young adults, and their families in the City of St. John’s. This grant program is made possible thanks to a three-year funding commitment from Public Safety Canada, announced in February 2023, to enhance community safety and collaboration.
Initiatives should align with the goals and best practices outlined in Section 4.2.4 of the Building Safer Communities Strategy and/or address risk and protective factors outlined in Annex A in the application form.
Approximately $575,000 in grant funding will be awarded for projects ending by March 2026. The maximum amount that can be awarded to community-based service providers is $150,000. Depending on the scope of the proposed project and the number of partnerships involved, additional funds may be available.

The City of St. John's aims to conserve significant heritage resources including buildings and streetscapes. The Heritage Financial Incentives Program assists property owners to maintain designated heritage buildings and homes. Properties in the City's Heritage Areas will also be considered.
Two types of grants are available through this program:
Applications are available online and must be submitted to the City between March 1 and May 1 for the following calendar year. Once a grant application is approved, Council may waive associated permit fees.

The meeting, convention, or sporting event must have at least 75 percent of delegates, athletes, coaches, and/or officials from outside the province, in order to be considered eligible.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be received at least 14 days prior to the scheduled event in order to be considered eligible.

Funding is available for youth who are residents of St. John's who are travelling outside of the province for events that broaden horizons in education, sport, culture, or social or political interests. This includes:
Youth are considered up to 29 years of age and registered or attending a secondary or a post-secondary institution.
