Water and Wastewater System

The City of St. John's owns, operates and maintains a vast water and sewer distribution network with about:

• 625 km of watermains
• 460 km of sewer mains
• 3,400 hydrants
• 10,500 valves
• 7,800 manholes

Our drinking water comes from Broad Cove River, Windsor Lake, Bay Bulls Big Pond and Petty Harbour Long Pond watersheds. It is processed at three water treatment facilities. We regularly test our water quality to ensure it complies with national guidelines. City wastewater is collected and treated at the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment facility.
