Our City Our Future is the overarching strategy document for the City of St. John's. It provides strategic direction for a ten-year period, 2019-2029. The plan is a living document. Updates are aligned with our budget cycle so that identified initiatives are funded and resourced. By tying the plan to daily work, we ensure we are accountable to the public.
Adopted on March 25, 2019, the plan was built following a year-long engagement process with input from the public, staff and Council. This What We Heard document reflects public feedback that helped shape the plan.
The first planned review was completed in late 2021. This review included consultation with Council, management, and staff and was informed by the results of the City's Resident Satisfaction Survey conducted in November of 2020. The review reconfirmed the plan's four strategic directions, first adopted in 2019. It recommended the addition of two new goals and the modification of an existing goal to reflect work on climate adaptation and service excellence. These revisions, approved by Council on April 4, 2022, will help strengthen the plan and bring focus to the City's work over the course of the term of Council.
Our City Our Future was created to shape and direct the City's strategic decisions. It sets out a long-term vision for St. John's as a progressive city, shaped by its geography and history, where people want to live and feel they belong.

The directions are designed for a period of ten years, with the goals designed for the life of Council. Each new Council will review and adjust the goals to reflect emerging and changing priorities. The City identifies strategic activities through a departmental planning process which results in an annual action plan.
