Each year the City of St. John's hosts a forum to speak about important topics around housing in recognition of National Housing Day (November 22, 2024). This year's forum, which will take place on November 29, will focus on shifting demographics with a spotlight on immigration and international students.
The global housing crisis often leads to misplaced blame on vulnerable groups, including immigrants and newcomers with precarious rights. As immigration policies become increasingly tied to the conversation around affordable housing, understanding these connections is essential. In recent years, Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador have welcomed more immigrants, even as the region faces economic challenges and a shortage of affordable housing.
This year’s forum will feature keynote speaker Dr. Yolande Pottie-Sherman from Memorial University, who will explore the intersection of immigration and housing. Additionally, a roundtable discussion will bring together perspectives from those with lived experiences and representatives from both the private and non-profit sectors.
The 2024 National Housing Day Forum aims to foster empathy and dialogue within St. John’s housing community while deepening awareness of the unique challenges faced by immigrants and international students. By highlighting these perspectives, we hope to inspire a collaborative approach to addressing housing vulnerabilities.
Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of an important conversation.
