On Monday, August 22, thousands of fans crowded the streets of downtown St. John’s to get a glimpse of Stanley Cup champion Alex Newhook. Alex spent his day with the Cup amongst friends and fans here in St. John’s. At a celebration on George Street that day, Mayor Breen announced plans to commemorate Alex and his stellar career with a mural to be placed outside the DF Barnes Arena.
“Aside from all the hockey accolades, Alex is a remarkable young man with a dedication to local charities and a commitment to local sports, especially the Avalon Celtics. In fact, Alex spent much of his day with children from the club, and then donated over $11,000 to the City’s REAL program from his Stanley Cup celebrations,” said Mayor Breen. “We’re very pleased that the legacy project announced this summer is now installed for thousands of children to see and enjoy for years to come.”
The mural tells the story of Alex's hockey career from his Avalon Celtics roots to hoisting the Cup as an integral member of the Colorado Avalanche Championship team.
Mark Sexton, President of the Avalon Minor Hockey Association, is pleased to see the mural, designed by Impact Signs & Graphics Ltd., adorning the club’s current facility.
“We were thrilled when the Mayor contacted us about this project. The mural's high impact, bold imagery decorating our classic barn will serve to inspire our young athletes for years to come and remind everyone that hard work and commitment can make any dream a reality."
As for Alex Newhook himself, his response to hearing that the mural is in place and seeing pictures of it outside the arena speaks to the kind of champion he is and to his deep connection to this community.
“It’s such an honour to have my name displayed on the outside of the DF Barnes arena,” said Alex.
“When I was growing up, seeing players who were born here having their names across rinks in the province motivated me to chase my dreams. I hope that this mural can do the same for the next generation of youth and be an example to them that anything is possible. Thank you to the City of St. John’s and the Avalon Celtics for this mural. I’m very humbled to have this shown at the home of the Avalon Celtics.”
