On August 22, the City of St. John’s held the Stanley Cup Parade for champion Alex Newhook of the Colorado Avalanche. The streets of St. John’s were lined with people of all ages wanting to celebrate the occasion.
This marks the first time the Stanley Cup has made it to St. John’s and the excitement from the crowd along the parade route and at George Street was contagious. The residents of St. John’s are certainly very proud of Alex Newhook. Countless children attended the event hoping to get a glimpse or photo of Alex and the cup.
Once a young St. John’s resident playing local hockey like many of his spectators, he acknowledged the kids and said, “Keep dreaming, anything is possible.” Who knows, one of those little hockey fans may be bringing the Stanley Cup home in years to come because Alex’s words made them believe they could.
The City would like to thank all City staff, speakers at the event, parade participants, and Alex Newhook and his family for sharing the Stanley Cup with us. They all had a part in making this event a huge success.
Congratulations to Alex Newhook for all his hard work and accomplishments. The City is very proud to have been a part of such a momentous occasion.
