Electrical Permits and Inspections

Are you having electrical work done on your property? Did you know... You need a Licensed Electrical Contractor for this work?

Permits for all electrical work can only be issued to electrical contractors. The City licenses contractors who employ journeyman electricians with proper qualifications. 

Apply for an electrical permit

Complete the applications required to obtain an Electrical Contractor's License or an Electrician Journeyman's License from the City. Then complete the electrical permit application for the property that will be obtaining the work. 

We cannot give a property owner an electrical permit. But remember, you are responsible:

• to get your work done by someone authorized to do it.
• to make sure a permit for the work is in place.

Understanding the inspection process

Electrical Inspection staff carry out inspections to ensure work complies with:

• the Canadian Electrical Code
• the Electrical By-Law 

They make sure the wiring, connections, fixtures and equipment in all buildings are installed and maintained safely.

Inspections happen at various stages. They check on progress in new construction and they also check on repairs and renovation in existing buildings.
