Security Incident on Curb It St. John's Website

On April 23, the City of St. John’s was alerted to a malware incident involving its CurbItStJohns.ca website. The website was made unavailable to users while the issue was being investigated, and the malware was quickly identified and removed. Following additional security measures being put in place, the website is now available again to the public.

Out of an abundance of caution for cyber security, the City will not be providing details of how the malware was installed or additional security measures that have been put in place.

To our knowledge, there has been no adverse incidents or data breaches resulting from this malware attack. As a precaution, we encourage residents to be vigilant when browsing websites.

Examples of suspicious activity to look out for includes:

• Unexpected Pop-ups: If you see unusual or unexpected pop-up windows, it could be a sign of malicious activity. Immediately close any pop-ups or windows that seem suspicious.

• Strange Requests: Be cautious if a website asks for personal information or login credentials in an unusual manner. Avoid entering sensitive information if you suspect the website is not secure.
• Redirects: If you are redirected to a different website without clicking a link, it may be a phishing attempt.

The City of St. John’s recognizes the growing complexity of cyber security and will continue to be diligent in detecting and addressing issues.
