April 16 to 22 is Volunteer Week. Congratulations and thank-you to all staff who volunteer in our community. Your efforts help to make St. John’s a great place to live, learn, work, play and visit.
The theme for Volunteer Week this Year is “Volunteering Weaves us Together.”
On March 28, the City recognized outstanding volunteers in our community for their contributions to our community as part of the Applause Awards.
The Volunteer Youth of the Year for 2022 is Radhika Verma. As a MUN Pharmacy student, Radhika is passionate about championing other women in STEM. She provides naloxone training with the Opioid Awareness Support Team to empower vulnerable populations and offers smoking cessation and medication coverage to newcomers.
As an avid volunteer in various community groups, Radhika's diverse background inspires others.
"I enjoy the sense of community and satisfaction of making a difference in people's lives,” says Radhika. “Shout out to the Applause Awards for recognizing the importance of volunteerism!"
The Volunteer Adult of the Year for 2023 is Stephen Jewczyk.
Stephen is recognized for over 40 years of dedicated volunteerism in a wide variety of areas including supportive housing, food networks, environmental activism, and recreational sport. Stephen has worked with Stella’s Circle, Cochrane Street United Church, and numerous other organizations.
“My volunteerism is rooted in my life-long passion to serve my community in order to make it a better place for individuals and a more caring community for all,” says Stephen. Every step of the way for the past 40 years has been so richly rewarding. It has been a humbling experience to be nominated among so many other deserving volunteers. Thank you to St. John’s City Council and my nominators for this most meaningful recognition.”
Wheels for Wishes are the Volunteer Group of the Year for 2023. A group of eight dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to educate the community about sight loss and inclusion, Wheels for Wishes has raised over $150,000 to support the Buddy Dog program and other efforts.
Wheels for Wishes were nominated for this award by the CNIB.
“CNIB is extremely thankful to the members of the Wheels for Wishes crew for their amazing work and dedication to the Guide Dog Program since 2020,” says Duane Morgan Vice President, CNIB Atlantic Canada. “They are working to help CNIB create change, break down barriers, raise awareness and Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for creating change and breaking down barriers for young children living in our province with vision loss. We are so very grateful!"
