Off-road vehicles like dirt bikes, ATVs, UTV’s and 4x4s provide fun opportunities to explore the outdoors. However, off-roading comes with responsibilities to ensure safety, protect the environment, and respect public spaces. Off-road vehicles are not permitted on City property including sports fields, as they can cause significant damage. This past weekend, the City was disheartened to find a gate was broken at the soccer field at McNiven Place and a UTV was used on the field, leaving damage.
Off-roading is designed for designated trails, forests, and open areas that can withstand the wear and tear of vehicle use. Using designated areas reduces conflicts with other land users and helps maintain the integrity of public spaces.
City sports fields are built for activities like soccer and baseball. These fields are carefully maintained to ensure they provide a safe, level playing surface for athletes of all ages. When off-road vehicles are used on these fields, they cause ruts, tire marks, and compacted soil, making the surface unsafe for use. Repairs can be costly, time-consuming and can delay fields opening on time for sports organizations.
Responsible use of off-road vehicles ensures everyone can continue to enjoy their recreational activities in their neighbourhoods.
