Today, City Council approved a new Street Naming and Civic Addressing Policy. The new policy clearly defines a process for the naming of streets or the changing of street names, and what steps are required to request a name change. More information about the policy and procedures is outlined in the Committee of the Whole Agenda.
There are currently three street names that are reserved for development that have been approved by St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) and Council. The City also has a list of over 400 street names that have been previously submitted without background information or diversity considerations. The Reserved Street Names Inventory will begin anew and residents who wish to resubmit a name can do so under the new policy.
The Nomenclature Committee is being dissolved and will now be replaced with the Street Naming Advisory Committee. The committee will review street naming applications received from both developers and the public and will consult with the Inclusion Advisory Committee, and other groups as required, to support an equitable and diverse selection of names. The committee will be comprised of City staff from various divisions including a representative from SJRFD to ensure a street name shall not be a duplicate of an existing street or sound similar to any other street under the responsibility of SJRFD.
