Today, Mayor Darrin Bent of the Town of Conception Bay South, Mayor Dan Bobbett of the Town of Paradise, and Mayor Danny Breen of the City of St. John’s, together signed a Letter of Intent to establish a Regional Economic Development Agency that will align resources and collectively elevate economic development opportunities to build stronger and more resilient communities in the region.
The independent agency will have representation from each municipality on a governance board and will be supported through financial and non-financial investments from each municipality.
The initiative to explore regional cooperation was first announced in June 2021, with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) contributing funding towards a consultancy. Following a public call for proposals, a consultant, MDB Insight, was retained to complete research, stakeholder interviews, analysis and a scope of opportunities.
A strategic framework will be developed with the initial areas of focus related to ocean technology and associated areas as well as talent attraction/development. It is intended that these focus areas will support growth and expansion of business activity that will lead to long-term value-added employment in the region.
“As individual municipalities, we are all very strong, forward-thinking, and poised for growth; however, when we pool our resources and expertise, the potential is limitless. Working together for the betterment of all just makes good sense. The regional economic development model has proven successful, and we look forward to a committed, collaborative approach.”
Darrin Bent, Mayor, Town of Conception Bay South
“Industries are shifting, businesses are pivoting, and governments need to do the same. We already have a strong track record of working together regionally for shared services and working on a regional approach to economic development is the logical next step. Each municipality has expertise, knowledge, and know-how and bringing it all together means benefits for our municipalities, for our region, and for our province. We have been proud to be part of this initiative with our neighbouring municipalities and it’s exciting to take the steps to create a true regional approach to economic development.”
Dan Bobbett, Mayor, Town of Paradise
“Our region is a vibrant and exciting place to do business, and I firmly believe that we can achieve much more by working together. I am pleased that we have come to an agreement that will set parameters to establish an agency that will bring a regional economic development framework to life. I’m excited for the next steps as our communities come closer together to address challenges and to create employment and economic opportunities that will benefit the region, and the province.”
Danny Breen, Mayor, City of St. John’s
