By Morgan Cole, Outdoor Recreation Instructor
Would you like to share your love of the outdoors with people of all ages and backgrounds and be the one who helps them have real, meaningful and new experiences close to nature?
The City of St. John’s is hiring Outdoor Recreation Instructors right now. The pay is pretty good, opportunities are excellent to advance with the City and, best of all, you get to work at something so rewarding!
I spent much of my time growing up outside. From fishing, hiking, camping, I learned to love all aspects of the outdoors, and I know the benefits it can have not only physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.
Working for the City has really tied together all the things I value in life and has made the job feel less like a job and more like an opportunity. In fact, I’m currently enrolled in the Physical Education program at Memorial University. This job has really contributed to my learning because it allows me to take what I learn in class and apply it directly to my work.
As it stands today, my goal is to be the best physical education teacher I can possibly be. I want my students to feel valued and welcomed into an equitable and inclusive environment with opportunity to find success. Over the past few years working as an Outdoor Recreation Instructor I have had the opportunity to develop and present lessons and instruction. This has boosted my confidence speaking in front of an audience, improved my demonstration skills and helped me to be adaptable – sometimes we have to react on the fly!
My favorite part of the job would have to be the connections I make with my co-workers and the participants in all of the courses. I think being in an outdoor environment gives you the best opportunity for developing meaningful relationships - so many of us are stuck inside for most of the day.
Consider applying for a position with us in Outdoor Recreation; it’s a win-win scenario if you ask me.'
