Today, Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary was joined by the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, and artist Lily Taylor to announce the design concept and funding for a ‘Come Home’ mural on Harvey Road. The mural will celebrate the meaning of home to people of Newfoundland and Labrador – Indigenous people, newcomers, and multigenerational families.
“I am pleased to announce that we have awarded the Come Home mural project to artists Lily Taylor and Molly Margaret,” says Deputy Mayor O’Leary, council lead for Arts and Culture. “We are excited to learn more about their design, which will help beautify the city and enhance the area of Harvey Road. Supporting local artists is of great importance to me, and to all members of city council.”
The City has committed $19,500 for this project which is supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador providing $24,500 through the Come Home 2022 Cultural Funding Program.
“I am delighted to see the Harvey Road mural project coming to fruition,” says The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation. “One of the aims of Come Home 2022 is to celebrate ‘home’ while supporting our tourism and cultural sectors and this project checks both those boxes. I wish Molly Margaret and Lily Taylor all the best with their project and look forward to seeing the mural unveiled in the spring.”
Molly Margaret and Lily Taylor have taken a digital approach to the creation of the mural. Their design will be adhered to thin aluminum panels, with installation of the panels scheduled to take place in spring 2023 on Harvey Road.
"Molly and I are so honoured and excited to have been selected for this project,” says Lily Taylor. “We want to create a mural that pays homage to the landscape, its flora and fauna, and the ever-expanding urban settings that define Newfoundland and Labrador. We hope that any member of the community can connect with the mural and in turn appreciate the people, places, and things that make Newfoundland, home.”
The City has adopted a partnership approach in the past few years to successfully leverage financial investments, expertise, and delivery of public art.
The Rooms Corporation is also a partner in the Come Home mural project and have provided studio and storage space for the artist team.
