The City of St. John’s reminds students, parents, and staff of St. Andrews Elementary, Prince of Wales Collegiate, and Memorial University of ongoing construction in the area, which will impact traffic as schools reopen in early September.
Simultaneous construction on Elizabeth Avenue, University Avenue/Prince Philip Drive, and Allandale Bridge is essential to complete key capital projects ahead of the 2025 Canada Games.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes, expect delays, and allow extra travel time. Please be patient and adhere to all signage and instructions from flagpersons. Pedestrians are also reminded to stay clear of work sites. Updates on construction projects are noted below:
Elizabeth Avenue Shared-Use Path and Road Improvements
- Phase 1, from Bonaventure Avenue to Westerland Road, is close to completion. The road is now open to the public.
- Phase 2, from Westerland Road to Freshwater Road, is scheduled to be completed by November 2024. Pedestrian access will be maintained through the work zone, signage is in place to direct pedestrians to safe crossing points.
- A detour is currently in place redirecting traffic through Howlett Avenue, Anderson Avenue, Guy Street, and Whiteway Street.
- Limited access to Paton Street will be maintained.
University Avenue/Prince Philip Drive Storm Sewer Upgrades
- Work is in progress from approximately 118 University Avenue to the Prince Philip Drive intersection.
- Traffic delays due to lane reductions and possible detours can be expected.
- Construction is scheduled to be completed by October 2024.
Lambe’s Lane/Fortis Canada Games Complex
- Construction work is currently underway.
- No pedestrian or bicycle traffic is permitted in this area – authorized construction personnel only.
- Paid parking at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church will be maintained during construction.
- Construction is scheduled to be completed in October 2024.
Allandale Road Bridge Rehabilitation
- Work is in progress.
- Traffic delays due to lane reductions and detours can be expected.
- Construction is scheduled to be completed by October 2024.
Westerland Road Storm Sewer Upgrades
- Work is close to completion. Westerland Road is now open to the public.
