To celebrate Circular Economy Month, the City of St. John’s is giving away free compost at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility, located at 340 East White Hills Road, every Saturday in October from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The compost giveaway is self-serve. Please bring your own gloves, shovels, and buckets to collect a maximum of 250 litres, or approximately 12 five-gallon buckets per visit. Mechanical equipment is not permitted. If you're using an open truck or trailer, you will be required to cover and secure the compost before you leave the site.
City compost is made from yard waste collected from residents, including leaves and pumpkins from the annual Pumpkin Walk. The compost, produced at Robin Hood Bay, is rich in nutrients and helps improve soil for gardens, lawns, and trees.
Since 2018, the City has required residents to use paper yard waste bags for curbside yard waste collection to help reduce useable waste going to the landfill. Since then, over 7,000 tonnes of yard waste have been composted, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 216 tonnes which is the same as taking 66 passenger vehicles off the road for a year.
