The City of St. John’s is adjusting its social media presence following a review of platform performance and engagement. The City will deactivate its corporate X (formerly Twitter) account, along with the What’s Happening St. John’s and Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) X accounts, effective April 4. The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has also made the decision to deactivate its X account.
The review highlighted concerns about the X platform, including reduced audience engagement, limitations on performance analytics and an increase in negative discourse. Given these factors, the City has decided to shift its resources to platforms that are receiving stronger performance and user engagement.
As the social media landscape evolves, the City will also monitor emerging platforms like Bluesky to assess their potential for future engagement.
