Today, the City of St. John’s announced the opening of the first locations for Level 2 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at:
There are two chargers at each location.
Additionally, Level 2 EV Chargers will be installed at Churchill Square (Rowan Street), Metrobus, City Hall, on Duckworth Street and at the new H.G.R. Mews Community Centre (once construction is complete).
“We are very pleased to highlight this action towards being a sustainable city,” said Councillor Ian Froude, lead for Sustainability. “As we strive towards achieving net zero by 2050, placing charging stations in public spaces makes it easier for the community to contribute to the community plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
In August 2021, Council approved a plan to increase access to public charging stations, funded by Pollution Probe through the Natural Resources Canada Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP). Chargers will also be installed at City facilities to enable the City to convert its light duty fleet to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
“We are proud to support the City of St. John’s in the further expansion of the EV charging network, making it easier for people to choose an EV by offering more options of places to charge,” said Krista Langthorne, Director, Customer Relations and Energy Solutions, Newfoundland Power. “We are planning today for tomorrow and by working together, we are creating a more sustainable and greener future for our province.”
A nominal hourly fee of $1.50 will be charged for EV Charger use; the Charger fee will be applied in addition to parking fees (where applicable). This is automatically applied through PayByPhone. These EV Charger fees will help the City support the program and they will be reviewed annually to ensure maintenance and charging costs are covered. City EV Charging Stations are for EVs to park while being physically connected to the chargers, up to a maximum of 3 hours. Vehicles that are not physically connected to the charger are subject to enforcement.
