On Thursday, June 27, 2024, municipalities were advised that the provincial fire ban would remain in place until July 31. Based on this information, the City of St. John’s made the difficult decision to cancel the fireworks planned for July 1.
This morning, the City of St. John’s was surprised to learn that the Provincial Government lifted the provincial fire ban, as there was no indication of this possibility the day prior. Unfortunately, based on this advice the City of St. John’s had already cancelled its service providers for the fireworks. Significant preparation and coordination goes into setting up for the fireworks, which normally would have begun first thing Friday morning. This includes everything from setting up fencing, securing firework technicians, organizing resources for parking restrictions, road closures and more. Unfortunately, the City of St. John’s is unable to re-secure all of the services required within the new timeline to proceed with the fireworks.
While the fireworks are cancelled, the City will still celebrate Canada Day with the below events.
The day will begin with a sunrise celebration from 6 to 7 a.m. at Signal Hill National Historic Site. A free wheelchair accessible Metrobus Shuttle will bring you from the Signal Hill Visitor Centre up to Cabot Tower. After the return shuttle, join everyone for free birthday cupcakes at the Signal Hill Visitor Centre.
An afternoon of free family fun and entertainment will take place at King George V Park (at the head of Quidi Vidi Lake) from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will include bouncers, Laser Tag, balloon twisters, interactive games, live music, an interactive cultural space, free birthday cupcakes and much more.
Featuring performances from Allison Walsh, Strength of the Drum, Soup' du Jour, Salt Beef Junkies and Jim Payne & Fergus O’Byrne. In the cultural interactive space, we will have a number of activities including dance workshops and showcases, a Cricket demonstration and a Canada Day Drumming event, which involves six minutes of simultaneous drumming that will take place from coast to coast.
Inclement weather location: Techniplex, 39 Churchill Avenue. Pets are not permitted at King George V Park or in the Techniplex.
