The City of St. John’s is taking part in Health Canada’s Take Action on Radon Program. Residents can test radon levels in their homes with a test kit.
There were 500 free radon test kits available for St. John’s residents, 100 per ward. Registration took place on November 21 on a first-come, first-serve basis. ID with proof of residency will be required.
Participants can pick up their testing kit starting Monday, December 9 and ongoing until Friday, December 13 at the following locations for each Ward:
Registered participants will be sent an invitation to attend a free radon information session on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The session will cover the health effects of radon, why it’s a concern, and Health Canada recommendations.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that enters homes through contact with the ground. When radon builds up to elevated levels, exposure can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. The only way to determine radon levels is through testing.
Frequently asked questions about testing, reducing and health effects of radon can be found here or you can contact info@takeactiononradon.ca if you have additional questions.
More information is available at TakeActionOnRadon.ca. Take Action on radon is a national initiative funded by Health Canada.
