The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is proud to announce the upcoming transition to PFAS-free bunker gear for all its active firefighters. This change represents a significant commitment to firefighter health and safety.
"We are proud to take this proactive step to safeguard the health and well-being of our firefighters," said Chief Sherry Colford of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department. "This transition to PFAS-free bunker gear reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the best protective equipment for our personnel. Ensuring that our firefighters are equipped with the safest gear available is a priority for us, and this is a vital step in that direction."
Bunker gear is protective clothing worn by firefighters during emergencies. This gear traditionally contained PFAS as the chemicals are known for being highly resistant to water, oil and heat, which made them ideal for enhancing the protective qualities of firefighting gear. By transitioning to PFAS-free gear, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department is addressing growing concerns about the risks associated with these substances, which have been associated with long-term health issues.
“Through the collaborative efforts of the St. John’s Firefighters Association, the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the City of St. John’s, we are replacing 100% of our PPE with PFAS Free Turnout Gear,” said Craig Smith, President of the St. John’s Firefighters Association IAFF Local 1075. “This initiative represents a shared commitment to reducing occupational cancer risks and ensuring that our members are equipped with the safest, most effective protective gear available. I want to thank all parties involved for their dedication to safeguarding the lives of those who serve our community daily.”
SJRFD will begin replacing approximately 250 active firefighter bunker suits, with an anticipated cost of $1.1 million, through a tendering process that is expected to begin in early 2025.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and protection for its firefighters while addressing the evolving needs of the community.
