The City of St. John’s is proud to announce a generous donation of over $105,000 from the Alex Newhook and Friends Charity Golf Classic to the REAL Program. Montreal Canadiens forward and St. John’s native Alex Newhook hosted the inaugural event in August of 2024. Funds raised went to several charities, including the REAL Program.
“On behalf of the City of St. John’s, I want to thank Alex Newhook and everyone who supported the inaugural golf tournament for this remarkable show of support,” said Mayor Danny Breen. “Thanks to their generosity, we can continue to ensure that financial challenges never stand in the way of a child’s potential. Together, we are creating meaningful opportunities for children and youth to thrive.”
This significant donation from the Alex Newhook and Friends Charity Golf Classic will enable the REAL Program to place over 400 children and youth into activities that foster both personal growth and community connection. From sports teams to dance classes and music lessons, these opportunities open doors to bright futures.
“I’m very proud and thankful of the efforts from everyone involved in the inaugural golf tournament to be able to give back to the community of St. John’s,” said Alex Newhook. "The REAL sports program gives an opportunity to kids that may not realize the impact sports can have on your life. To be able to give back, and see the amount of kids getting involved in sports is very surreal.”
On Tuesday, December 17 at 3 p.m. at the Committee of the Whole meeting, representatives from the Alex Newhook and Friends Charity Golf Classic will be in attendance to be recognized for their contribution.
The REAL Program is a nonprofit program dedicated to providing children and youth in financial need with access to sports, arts, and extracurricular activities. By connecting children with opportunities to explore their interests and talents, the REAL Program empowers them to achieve their full potential. The City of St. John's provides office space and staff support so that 100 percent of all donations go directly to funding these activities, ensuring maximum impact for REAL participants.
