Waste Reduction Week: Recycling Makes a Difference

Curb it truck picks up recycling at the curb in St.John's

In recognition of Waste Reduction Week, October 17 to 23, the City of St. John's is encouraging residents and organizations to reduce waste this week and throughout the year. It can be a bit overwhelming to get started, our staff are here to help you!

Residents and businesses are asked to recycle and to choose products and services that are environmentally friendly, committing to a cleaner, greener and more liveable St John’s.

City staff in our Waste and Recycling division are passionate and devoted to educating the public about programs and opportunities for waste reduction. Opportunities include:

  • Curbside recycling – it’s at your door step, all you need is a blue bag, learn more here.
  • Backyard composting – we offer free sessions every spring, summer and fall.
  • Grass and leaf mulching - the best thing to do is run over your leaves with the lawn mower or arrange a pick up and we will compost the leaves for you.
  • Proper disposal of hazardous and special waste material – bring your material to Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays.
  • Recycle your metal, electronics, containers, paper and cardboard from Tuesday to Saturday at the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility.
  • Use reusable shopping bags when shopping.

There are many partners working together to help make the City a clean and beautiful place.  This week the City would like to celebrate all residents, organizations and businesses who go the extra mile to divert waste from the landfill and to keep our City clean.

City staff will be at the Avalon Mall on Thursday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide information to the public. Prizes will be available, follow us on social media for updates and info @CityofStJohns.
