The Sisters of Presentation have gifted the St. Patrick’s Convent to the City of St. John’s to be used for affordable supportive housing for seniors. The 160 year-old property is at 15 Convent Square, off Hamilton Avenue in the west end of downtown St. John’s.

“We are called to serve the community, here and around the world, with care and compassion,"  says Sister Elizabeth (Betty Rae) Lee, Leader of the Sisters of the Presentation of Newfoundland and Labrador. "In keeping with the spirit of our foundress, Nano Nagle, we choose to gift this property to help the City provide affordable supportive housing to vulnerable senior citizens.”

Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth, Chair of the City’s Housing Committee acknowledged the Sisters’ care for the vulnerable. “In keeping with the generosity and mission of the Sisters we are committed to providing affordable housing units for senior citizens in need of a safe and supportive place to call home.”

Councillor Jonathan Galgay committed to ensuring the aesthetic and historical values of the designated Municipal Heritage Structure would be maintained during the transition to affordable housing units. "We are incredibly grateful to the Presentation Sisters for such a significant and historical gift to the City.”

Over the next year, the City will work with like-minded partners to convert the property to supportive residences for seniors. The City will consult with the Presentation Sisters on the property’s new name, and will reserve two units for elderly Sisters.
