Neighbourhood Profiles: University Area

This neighbourhood is best known for being the location of the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's campus, which includes the Health Sciences Centre, the largest hospital in the province. This area is bordered by several neighbourhoods including Pippy Park, Rennie's River, and Kenmount East and features schools, parks, sports fields, and recreational trails.

This neighbourhood contains recognized historical, cultural, and social areas. These are inclusive within the boundaries of this profile with respect to their established identities, assets, and residents.


Growing from its roots as a college on Parade Street in 1925 (now part of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary buildings), Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) is one of the largest universities in Atlantic Canada.
With over 18,000 students from over 100 countries, the province's only university has grown to become a major part of the community. Located centrally, the university has become a landmark for locals and visitors alike.

Memorial University students represented 15% of the total population of St. John's in 2018. Students come from all over the world to study here - welcome all!
