Councillor Maggie Burton is originally from Brigus, and has been proud to call St. John’s her home since 2009. In 2013 she completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from Memorial University, where she studied violin and music history. Maggie currently plays violin with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. 
Prior to serving on Council, Maggie maintained an active music studio as a Suzuki-trained violin teacher. She is the outgoing Artistic Director of the Suzuki Talent Education Program, an educational nonprofit, and she is the former Music Director of King’s Bridge Montessori School. She served as former Co-Artistic Director of both the Newfoundland and Labrador Suzuki Institute and Iceberg Chamber Music Institute. 
An active gigging musician and arts administrator, she co-directs an ever-evolving new music ensemble, the St. John’s New Music Collective, and manages a chamber group, Avalonia Duo. Maggie is a frequent contributor to and organizer of events and concerts; tribute shows to Leonard Cohen and Joanna Newsom were recent highlights. 
She is also a well-published and award-winning poet. Her first chapbook of poetry was independently released in 2017. Maggie applies her creative skills to her work as a leadership coach and business consultant, specializing in the application of precise and empathetic communication to support leaders and organizations in achieving their full potential.
She lives near Quidi Vidi Lake with her husband Chris and her two beautiful children, Jack and Ursula. 

She is Council lead for Planning and Development; the Youth Advisory Committee; Developpment Committee; Animal Care and Control; Heritage; and a member of the Audit Committee.
