City Reminds Drivers to Slow Down in School Zones

As kids return to school next week, motorists are reminded to reduce their speed to a maximum of 30 km/hr when driving through school zones in St. Johns.
The following streets are identified as school zones, and the speed limit of 30 km/hr will be in effect on these streets starting on Tuesday, September 7 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days:
- Pennywell Road – Bishop Abraham Elementary School
- Bond Street – Bishop Feild Elementary School
- Canada Drive – Cowan Heights Elementary School

Road Closure: Power's Road

Power’s Road between Back Line and Bidgood Park parking lot will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians on Thursday Sept. 1, 2022 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to facilitate culvert repairs. Use an alternate route and expect delays.

Detour: Water Bridge Road

Motorists are advised that a detour will be in place on Waterford Bridge Road from Road Deluxe to Topsail Road from Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 7 a.m. to Friday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. to facilitate road construction. Flag Persons will be on site during construction.

Text Amendment: Restaurant in Commercial Highway Zone

The City is considering a text amendment to the St. John’s Development Regulations, that would add Restaurant as a Permitted Use in the Commercial Highway (CH) Zone.

Closure: Alexander Street Area

Due to sewer main repairs the following roads are closed Tuesday, August 30 2022, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
- Alexander St (Water St to Hamilton Ave)
- Angel Pl (Alexander St to End)
- Murphy's Sq (Alexander St to End)
Use an alternate route and expect delays.
Emergency vehicles and local traffic, including those visiting family, friends, businesses in the area will have access, while all through traffic will be detoured.

Lane Closure: Thorburn Road

The eastbound lane on Thorburn Road at the Team Gushue Highway Overpass will be closed 9 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022 to 12 noon Wednesday, August 31, 2022 to facilitate construction.

Road Construction: August 29 to September 2

Contractors may be working on the following streets from August 29 to September 2 under the City’s annual streets rehabilitation and infrastructure maintenance programs. Work could include concrete/street excavation, concrete work, paving, utility adjustment, ditch cleaning and culvert installation. Commuters may experience traffic delays in these areas:
