Sidewalk Snow Clearing Routes

The City clears sidewalks on at least one side of the majority of all arterial and collector streets near schools. There are 36 schools in total. Areas immediately adjacent to schools are the first priority. Once the immediate school sidewalks are clear, staff start clearing outwards from the schools to connect them with residential areas.

Sidewalk snow clearing routes can take 4 to 7 days to complete. The map attached shows sidewalks cleared in the City of St. John’s. If a snowfall occurs before all sidewalks are completed staff have to return to the school zones and start over.

Sidewalk snow plow operators navigate narrow areas, light poles, parked cars, fire hydrants, garbage and recycling bags, and other infrastructure. Safety of the public and the plow operators is a priority. Please be patient and cautious when a side walk plow is operating in your area.
