Neighbourhood Profiles Series: Southlands-Galway

Southlands Community Centre
The Southlands-Galway neighbourhood boasts many conveniences such as trails, a golf course, parks and open space and exceptional shopping facilities. Close to the highway, this area is popular with families and professionals. Located in the west end of the city, Southlands-Galway borders the agricultural land of Goulds and the beautiful open spaces of Paddy's Pond.

In 2014, Southlands Community Centre opened its doors at an official ceremony attended by dignitaries, neighbours and the children who benefit most from this facility. Then Mayor Dennis O’Keefe helped the children plant a tree on the grounds and place the final Lego piece on a charming sign for the facility created by the children.

“We know that the residents of Southlands are as excited about the possibilities for this facility as we are, and we hope the facility is as well used as the playground, soccer field and trail system are already.” - Mayor Dennis O’Keefe, July 17, 2014.

The Community Centre is located in the heart of the neighbourhood in a park-like setting off Teakwood Drive. There are walking trails and a playground, soccer field, basketball court, and skate park. Inside amenities include two multi-purpose rooms, a board room, a kitchen, and wheelchair accessibility.

The $3 million funding for this project was first announced in September 2012, as part of a 50-50 cost-shared arrangement with the Provincial Government. Construction began in 2013 and concluded late spring, 2014. A number of public engagement sessions were conducted with the neihbourhood to determine how the facility would be used.

Southlands Community Centre continues to be a hub for the neighbourhood with ongoing recreation and after school programs and is used by community groups for functions and events. Details on current programs are available on the City’s website or at RECconnect. For more information or to book a rental please call 709-364-5252 or 709-364-5129, or email recreation@stjohns.ca.
