Municipal Awareness Day

Students and teachers from MacDonald Drive Elementary School visited City Hall to recognize Municipal Awareness Day and were hosted by Deputy Mayor Ron Ellsworth, and Councillors Sheilagh O'Leary, Danny Breen and Art Puddister.

The students visited Access St. John's, the citizen service centre, before taking part in a group decision making activity in the Foran/Greene room to identify which level of government (municipal, provincial, federal) was responsible for providing a specified public service.

The councillors then invited the students into the Council Chambers where they learned more - and asked lots of questions - about the governance and decision-making structure of the City of St. John's. The learning experience concluded with students filling the roles in the Chambers including councillors, executive staff, legislative staff, media, community groups seeking proclamations, and the public gallery, and ended when the Sargeant at Arms rang the bell, announced the Mayor and placed the mace in front of the Mayors desk.
