Municipal Auditor General: Engagement Opportunity

budget logo

As part of the public engagement process on Budget 2018, a suggestion was made for the City to examine its audit function and to consider the possibility of a Municipal Auditor General.

In December 2017, the City appointed a three-person panel to advise on whether or not the current governance process for its internal audit function best serves the goals of accountability and transparency to members of the public. Members of the Panel are: Mr. Terry Paddon, CPA, CA – Chair; Ms. Lynn Zurel, CPA, CA; and Mr. Simon Lono.

The panel has identified some broad areas for consideration at this point and is seeking feedback from the public in general. Options currently include: status quo; status quo with governance changes; enshrine mandate of internal audit in city by-laws; increase external membership on audit committee; audit committee have a greater role in internal audit resourcing; increase internal audit function staff with governance changes; or move to a municipal auditor general structure.

An engagement page has been developed for online feedback; members of the public can submit feedback at engagestjohns.ca, or they can submit ideas via email to engage@stjohns.ca.

A public session is also planned and all interested individuals are invited to attend:
