Feedback Needed: Downtown Winter Parking Restriction

The City is seeking public feedback on the 2018 winter parking restriction pilot project that took place between 3:30 to 6:30 a.m. daily on sections of Water Street and Duckworth Street in February and March.

“The goal of this pilot project was to determine if a parking restriction would enhance snow clearing and accessibility in the downtown core,” said Councillor Debbie Hanlon, Council Representative for Downtown St. John’s. “Before any final decision is made on whether the restriction will be implemented permanently, we want to hear from all users of the downtown including residents, business owners, property owners, employees, service providers and customers.”

To date, public engagement on the parking restriction included a focus group with users of the downtown that were directly impacted by the change, and a survey of downtown business/property owners. A meeting of all downtown membership organizations was also held. The next step in the engagement process is to get input from the public at large.

“There are many people that were affected by this parking restriction and we need to ensure that we reach out to as many as possible and hear all of their concerns and ideas,” said Councillor Hanlon. “Users of the downtown live throughout the region, not just in St. John’s, and we encourage anyone that was affected to take part in this process. Through this engagement our goal is to ensure that all public concerns are considered and understood.”

The engage project page provides information about the pilot project and seeks input through a poll and discussion page. Go to engagestjohns.ca to provide your feedback.

Following this process a ‘What we Heard’ document will be released and a report will be presented to Council for a decision prior to the start of the 2019 winter season.
