An Effective City: 2020 Year in Review

Effective City Icon
  • In September, the City of St. John's received World Council on City Data (WCCD) ISO 37120 Platinum Certification. This international recognition is awarded to cities that reach the highest standard in collecting, sharing, and using data to effectively make decisions.
  • In 2020, we continued to build continuous improvement capacity and undertake projects focused on saving time, money, or capacity. 19 city employees completed their Lean yellow belt certifications in 2020 and have projects underway bringing the total number of active projects to 25. These projects focus on everything from improving data quality at intake on applications, streamlining application or internal processes, and improving resource allocations by reducing step, rework in a process.
  • New training and tools for change management were developed in 2020 to be rolled out in 2021 and a new learning and development policy results in a streamlined process for application internally, with overall cost savings.
  • 2020 has seen accounts payable move toward implementing an automated workflow solution for keying of accounts payable invoices, and in September, Council approved a new Asset Management Policy for the City which gives us a better understanding of the assets we own, better decision-making and long-term planning.
  • The City Clerk’s office has made significant strides in 2020 towards improved file management, including the completion of digitization of archival minute ledgers in our Archives - which protects value files from potential loss -  through a federal grant.

Kenmount Fire Station Renovation Project Kenmount Fire Station recently underwent an extensive renovation including a new front façade, a new study, a new captains office, new men’s and women’s washroom and shower facilities, a renovated kitchen and training area, a fitness room and a new SCBA room with locker storage, a dedicated wash station for bunker gear and a new drying room.
