Downtown Pedestrian Mall Proposal

The City of St. John’s has proposed the creation of a pedestrian mall in the downtown for portions of the summer. The goal of the mall is to encourage residents and visitors to see the downtown as a destination this summer, providing ample space for individuals to visit downtown businesses safely, enjoy the atmosphere and to, most importantly, shop local.

The proposal includes the development of vehicle-free zones on Water and Duckworth Streets.

Currently, the City has asked Downtown St. John’s to poll its members on different options for operation, and to get their feedback on this possible summer event. In addition, City Council is planning a virtual meeting for businesses operating in the downtown who are not connected through the business development association.

A final decision will be made once feedback from the business community is gathered and evaluated.
