The City of St. John's along with community partners Memorial University School of Human Kinetics and Recreation and the NL Kinesiology Association (NLKA), with participation from NLKA members, is recognizing and celebrating National Health & Fitness Day on Saturday, June 1. National Health & Fitness Day has been recognized in Canada since 2015 and brings communities together to highlight the importance of health and fitness.

A variety of free community events and classes are being offered to encourage everyone, from children to seniors, to get out and get active. Find the complete listing on our Healthy Communities webpage and on social media search #healthycityYYT or National Health & Fitness Day.

The City and partners encourage everyone from children to seniors to get out and get active on National Health and Fitness Day, encouraging in particular outdoor active free play as it promotes healthy lifestyles and social connections that support positive mental health. Based on the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity per week while youth should get at least 60 minutes of the same per day. Data from across Canada shows that only 15% of adults, and 7% of children and youth are meeting current physical activity guidelines.
