Snow Clearing

Plow Clearing SnowThe on-street parking ban for areas outside the downtown was set to begin in early January 2020. However, due to significant snowfalls in the forecast, is implemented 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019 and will be in effect for the remainder of the 2019-2020 winter season.

On average, St. John’s receives 335 cm of snow each year. The City of St. John's budgets approximately $16 million each year for snow clearing and ice control operations.

The City works hard to clear our streets and sidewalks to standards approved by Council. Our standards are similar to other cities with weather conditions like ours. Streets are salted and plowed in a priority order that is primarily based on traffic volumes. This ensures emergency vehicle access is maintained to the greatest number of residents at all times.

Throughout the City, winter parking restrictions are in place to ensure that our plows can clear our streets safely and effectively. Streets may also be schedule for snow removal thoughout the season.
