The City maintains over 459 kilometres of sanitary sewer mains ranging in size from 90 mm (3 1/2 in) to 2,135 mm (7 ft) in diameter. In addition, there are approximately 40 kilometres of combined sanitary and storm sewers. There are more than 7,800 manholes giving access to these pipes. The City is constantly working to video, flush and repair any of these pipes that cause a problem.
The City also provides many services to owner-occupied residences to try and remove blockages which prevent household sewer from reaching the main sewer pipes. These include plunging, using sewer rods, videoing, augering, flushing or digging residential sewer pipes that connect the house to the sewer mains. One or all of these actions may be required depending upon the situation.
