Theatres and Venues

There are several theatres and live venues in the City of St. John’s. The City houses an array of performances ranging from small edgy, original work created by local artists to 1100 seat venues presenting performances from international artists. The theatre season typically begins in September but summer shows are continuing to grow and develop. For more information, see listings below.

Arts and Culture Centre
Presents a wide variety of programming from local productions to diverse artists from across Canada and abroad.  The Centre houses a 1,007 seat proscenium Main Theatre, a 75 seat black box Basement Theatre, and the A.C. Hunter public library.

Holy Heart Theatre
A 900 seat school theatre booked by national concert promoters, community theatrical groups, music festivals, dance schools, and local musicians.

Masonic Temple
An historic building that is available as a rental facility for wedding, concerts, private parties, art exhibitions, and live performances.  This venue also has a kitchen.  Home to the musical theatre group Spirit of Newfoundland Productions.

Memorial University School of Music
Operates the D.F. Cook Recital Hall, a 296 seat concert hall available for music and speech,and the Petro-Canada Hall which seats about 120 and has multimedia and recording capabilities.  There are also choral and rehearsal rooms available for rent.  These facilities can be booked by both the university community and external individuals and groups.

Mile One Centre
Home to the American Hockey League team the St. John's IceCaps, this multi-purpose sport and entertainment centre also offers a wide variety of other programming including concerts, trade shows and special events.  Mile One Centre has a 6,000 seat spectator capacity.

Resource Centre for the Arts
Includes the RCA Theatre Company (RCAT) and the LSPU Hall.  The theatre company provides resources and a supportive environment for the production and promotion of theatre in St. John's and throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  The LSPU Hall is a 200 seat non-profit rental facility that operates year-round.

The Ship Pub
The Ship Pub features live music most nights of the week and often hosts parties and events occurring as part of local festivals.  The food offered is traditional pub fare and the live performances are diverse, from young indie bands to some of the city's most established artists.
