Do you want to learn how to use geographical data and make your own informative maps?

Wednesday November 13th is GIS day, where events are being held all around the world. Join us for a completely free 1.5 hour workshop using GIS (Geographic Information Software). In this short workshop we’ll get you started with QGIS, a powerful spatial tool (details below). Bring your own charged laptop (if you have time beforehand, you can download the latest version of QGIS at qgis.org)

This would be a great workshop for those who like maps, information, and data, students who might be considering taking a GIS course, ArcGIS users who would like to try QGIS out, people interested in the environment, conservation, geography, or anyone really. No experience is required. As long as you can bring a laptop so you can participate in the activities, all are welcome.

We will learn how to:

  • Download and use QGIS
  • Manage and install plugins
  • Get free base maps
  • Add data to your maps
  • Find open data from other sources (like the Canadian or NL government or hiking websites) and add them to your maps
  • Create, design, and label your own maps.
