Consider serving your community as a member of the St. John's City Council!

The period for nominations to become a candidate in the municipal election is Aug 22-29. In order to run for Council (mayor, deputy mayor, councilor-at-large or ward councillor) you must:

  • Be 18 years of age at the time of nomination;
  • Be a Canadian citizen;
  • Be ordinarily resident in the City for 30 days preceding the nomination period;
  • Not be indebted to Council for arrears of taxes or other charges payable to the city;
  • Not be otherwise disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act.

 You can seek election for any position on Council as long as you meet the residency requirement of 30 days in the City prior to the nomination period. For other information about the nomination process, contact the Elections Coordinator or read the Candidate's Handbook.
