How do I apply for a job with the City?

How do I apply for a job with the City?
Applicants who currently work for The City of St. John’s should apply using the Internal Application process.

Applications are received only for competitions that are advertised. Positions that are open to the public are advertised on the City’s website under Employment Opportunities.

External applicants please apply as follows:

  • Submit a resume and cover letter in a single MS Word, PDF or plain text format.
  • Clearly display the competition number of the job you are applying for on your resume and/or cover letter. Applications without a reference number will not be processed.
  • If applying for more than one position, please submit a resume and cover letter for each position. We do not transfer resumes from one competition file to another.
  • Submit your application by the deadline date noted on the job posting.

Will you keep my resume on file for future job competitions?
We do not transfer resumes from one competition file to another. Please reapply for any future job competitions that you are interested in.

What documentation do I need to provide with my application?
The requirement to submit documents with your resume will be indicated on the job posting.

You may be asked to provide:

  • Academic diplomas
  • Training certificates
  • Code of Conduct with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • First Aid / CPR certificates
  • Driver's licence
  • Current Driver's Abstract

Do I need my high school diploma for employment with the City?
Yes. The City's minimum educational requirement is a High School Diploma or equivalency (GED or ABE).

Will applicants have to go through skill testing and a medical?
Depending on the position, skill testing and pre-employment medicals may be required. This will be discussed during the interview phase of our recruitment process.

Will I be notified if I am not selected for an interview?
We sincerely appreciate and thank all applicants for their interest in employment with the City of St. John’s, however only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
