ATIPPA Responses

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATIPPA) is legislated by the Provincial Government and designed to create a culture of openness and accountability in the public sector while protecting the personal information of citizens and commercially sensitive information of businesses. It applies to all public bodies including municipalities.

The ATIPP Act has two purposes:

  1. To provide the public with the right of access to records.
  2. To protect the privacy of individuals whose personal information is collected, used and disclosed by public bodies.

Informal Access
Certain records are available to the public without placing a formal ATIPP request. When possible, the City of St. John’s will provide individuals with access to information informally, without having to go through the formal ATIPP process. Examples of these records include:

  • Publications
  • Policies and/or guidelines
  • Forms
  • Reports and/or studies
  • Terms of Reference

Formal Access
The ATIPP Act provides individuals with the right to request access to information held by the City of St. John’s. To place a formal ATIPP request:

  1. Complete an Access to Information Request form.
  2. Deliver, mail or email your request to the City of St. John’s ATIPP coordinator.
  3. Pay any fee that may apply*.

*There is no cost to an applicant for the processing of an ATIPP request, unless the collection of information exceeds 10 hours, in which case, a cost estimate is provided to the applicant.
