Wildfire crews and the St. John's Regional Fire Department are responding to a wildfire at Thomas Pond, near Paddy’s Pond south, which is within the City of St. John’s jurisdiction. The fire is approximately 300 hectares.
A regional state of emergency has been declared by the Minister of Justice and Public Safety for parts of St. John's impacted by the fire, which includes Southlands and Galway. By declaring a regional state of emergency, the Provincial Government can coordinate the activities of all provincial and municipal services in the area and engage personnel as required.
The St. John's Regional Fire Department is providing ground support where necessary. While the fire is within the City boundary, it is also greatly impacting our regional neighbours in Paradise and CBS.

The Paddy’s Pond fire remains active with an estimated size of approximately 300 hectares. Bucketing will continue throughout the day, however there may be a delayed start to air response due to the low ceiling. Construction on a fire guard is complete and more work will continue today with help from the Canadian Armed Forces. There are 30 ground crew members working today to continue suppression efforts.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department are not active in the area today, but are on standby should support be required.
Progress has been made, but this is still an active fire. The evacuation order for Three Island Pond has been lifted, however the order remains in place for the Paddy's Pond Industrial Area. More information on evacuation orders and alerts are below.
We are encouraged by the progress being made in the Paddy’s Pond area and grateful for the hard work of everyone involved in the response. At the same time, we are devastated to see the destruction caused by the Kingston Fire. Our thoughts are with the residents, property owners, and all those affected by the damage. Wildfires leave a lasting impact on both landscapes and lives, and we cannot imagine the trauma and hurt that is being experienced by communities in the area.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available. Please ensure you continue to monitor the advisories section below for information as well. Stay safe, stay informed, and monitor local updates for changes.
Follow the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for the latest updates at gov.nl.ca/alerts.

Residents are advised to take a go bag with them if leaving their property and to make arrangements for pets and/or dependents in the event an evacuation order is issued. If an order is issued while you are away from your home and you have a pet or family member still at home, you will not be allowed back into the area. You should report the location of your loved ones to emergency personnel operating in the area so they can address accordingly.
In the case of an evacuation, the City would work with partnering agencies to facilitate transportation for those who do not own a vehicle or have mobility issues.

As a result of the fire, there may be drifting smoke into St. John’s and surrounding areas, reducing air quality levels.
Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off air exchangers and HVAC units to help reduce indoor smoke exposure. Please contact 811 or see a health-care provider if you experience any concerning symptoms related to smoke exposure such as a severe cough, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and/or wheezing.
Air quality warnings have been issued for St. John's and vicinity and residents are reminded to continue to monitor active air quality statements.
The Host Society and National Sport Organizations continue to assess the situation closely and update the sport schedule as needed. For all updates, download the free 2025 Canada Games app on the Apple App Store or Google Play or visit the news section of the 2025 Canada Games website.

We greatly appreciate the offers of help from residents and community groups as crews work to manage the wildfire near Paddy’s Pond. At this time, volunteers and additional supplies are not required by the City. Should volunteers or support be required, this would be coordinated through partnering agencies. If you are looking for ways to provide support, please reach out to the Salvation Army and Canadian Red Cross.
