If you have a medical emergency, you should go to the emergency department of a hospital. If you require an ambulance, call 911. The Provincial Medical Care Plan (MCP) does not cover the cost of ambulance services - you will receive a bill for the service.

A registered nurse provides callers with health advice and information 24 hours per day, seven days a week. All calls are confidential and free of charge. Service is available in English and French.
All hospitals and certified medical services in the St. John's metro area are operated by Eastern Health.
The two main hospitals for adults in St. John's are the Health Sciences Centre, Prince Philip Drive and St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, Lemarchant Road. Both offer emergency room services for adults. The Janeway Children's Hospital is the province's only children's hospital. It is attached to the Health Sciences complex. The Janeway offers emergency room services for children.
Many employers in St. John's offer their employees health benefits and medical insurance. Health insurance benefits may include prescription drug coverage, vision care and dental care plans. You can also contact a private health insurance company to discuss various health insurance packages. To find listings of insurance companies in the City, please search online.
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has a medical care plan designed to cover the cost of physician services for residents. A detailed list of the various types of medical services covered and all application forms needed for new applicants can be found by visiting the website.
There is no cost to apply for MCP. If you are accepted for coverage, you will receive a plastic MCP card with a personal health identity number. Present this card whenever insured services are received. Prescription drugs are not covered under MCP.
St. John's has many pharmacies where you can purchase over the counter and prescription medications. Many of the major supermarkets include in-store pharmacies as well.
