Salvation Army Week: December 19-24, 2022
WHEREAS: The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental provider of social services in Canada, providing food, clothing, and shelter in St. John’s and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: During the Holiday Season, The Salvation Army hosts its Kettle Campaign raising awareness about homelessness, poverty, and raising much needed funds to continue the organization’s vital work in the City of St. John’s; and WHEREAS: This week, December 19th to December 25th, marks the final week of The Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaign for 2022, raising funds to support the organization’s mission to end the cycle of poverty in St. John’s. |

Indigenous Disability Awareness Month November 2022WHEREAS: Indigenous peoples with disabilities often face unique barriers that impact their ability to fully participate in the social and economic opportunities available in our communities; and WHEREAS: we are committed to the ideal of an inclusive society based on respect and understanding, where Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) with disabilities and the significant contributions they provide to our communities, organizations, provinces, territories, and country are recognized, celebrated, and valued; and WHEREAS: we are committed to upholding and safeguarding the principles outlines in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), including full and effective participation and inclusion in society, equality of opportunity, and the United Nations CRPD International Committee’s recommendation to Canada to proclaim and recognize November each year as Indigenous Disability Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: we wish to recognize and support Indigenous Disability Canada (IDC)/British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society’s (BCANDS) creation of Indigenous Disability Awareness Month (IDAM) and join governments, urban and rural Indigenous communities, disability organizations, individuals with disabilities and their families, from across the country, in recognizing and celebrating these diverse and vital members of our communities.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November, as Indigenous Disability Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. Lung Cancer Awareness Month November 2022WHEREAS; lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in Canada, accounting for more deaths than colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combined; WHEREAS; over 20,000 Canadians are expected to die of lung and bronchus cancer in 2022, representing nearly one quarter of all cancer deaths in Canada; WHEREAS; according to research by Canadian oncologists, lung cancer is expected to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, with over 30,000 new lung cancer cases expected in 2022; WHEREAS; the 5-year survival rate for localized lung cancer is ~60%, yet only ~24% of lung cancers are diagnosed at this stage; WHEREAS; screening for lung cancer for high-risk individuals using low-dose computed tomography can lead to the earlier detection of lung cancer and save lives, reducing the mortality by 20% when compared to screening by chest x-ray in the National Lung Screening Trial and reducing the risk of death at 10 years by 24% in men and 33% in women as demonstrated by another large randomized trial; WHEREAS; funding for lung cancer research trails far behind funding for research of many other cancers, and additional research is needed in early diagnosis, screening, and treatment for lung cancer as well as in lung cancer affecting women and lung cancer health disparities; WHEREAS; organizations working in Canada such as the Canadian Lung Cancer Screening Initiative are committed to educating about lung cancer and lung cancer screening and working to increase lung cancer screening rates; WHEREAS; there is a need for research in lung cancer affecting women and lung cancer health disparities, and all citizens must be encouraged to learn about lung cancer and early detection through lung cancer screening;
THEREFORE, I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 2022 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. World Town Planning Day: November 8, 2022WHEREAS: November 8 has been celebrated, since 1949, as World Town Planning Day; and WHEREAS: the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Professional Planners, an affiliate of the Canadian Institute of Planners, marks this day; and WHEREAS: this is a day to acknowledge the role of planning in creating livable, sustainable communities; and a day to celebrate the contributions of planning to our quality of life;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 8, as World Town Planning Day in the City of St. John’s. Murphy Centre Live Event “Inspiring Lives” Annual Financial Appeal: November 9 to December 7, 2022WHEREAS: The Murphy Centre has been assisting men and women in achieving their academic and career goals for 36 years; and WHEREAS: The Murphy Centre is a registered non-profit charitable organization, rooted in local history and committed to addressing the emerging needs of 800 adults annually; and WHEREAS: On November 9, 2022, the Murphy Centre will launch the “Inspiring Lives” Annual Appeal for financial support and for four weeks will gratefully accept gifts in support of academic, career and life programs; and WHEREAS: your generous financial support will enable the Murphy Centre to move to a new level of enabling men and women who seek a deeper sense of fulfillment for themselves and their community;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 9th to December 7th, 2022, as the Murphy Centre’s Annual “Inspiring Lives Financial Appeal” in the City of St. John’s. Global Entrepreneurship Week: November 14 to 20, 2022WHEREAS: Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurship, focused on four theme areas: Education; Ecosystems; Inclusion; and Policy, and is hosted in Canada by Futurpreneur; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s embraces this entrepreneurial spirit, encouraging exploration of new ideas to create employment; and WHEREAS: Global Entrepreneurship Week, aimed at making it easier for anyone, anywhere to start a company, is celebrated in over 170 countries; and WHEREAS: Innovation and entrepreneurship are the economic foundations of a vibrant and growing community, we want to acknowledge the success and hard work of our businesses and their commitment to our community.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 14-20, 2022, as Global Entrepreneurship Week in the City of St. John’s. National Child Day: November 20, 2022WHEREAS: November 20, 2022, is recognized in Canada as National Child Day and internationally as World Children’s Day to commemorate the Convention on the Rights of the Children. It’s a special day to celebrate the rights of children everywhere, to help them live happy, healthy lives so that each child may reach their full potential. WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s Recreation Division has celebrated National Child Day for over 20 years and would like to continue to bring awareness of the rights of children in our community and abroad; and WHEREAS: In recognition of National Child Day, the Meet the Mayor contest was one of the activities that enables a student from the City’s Elementary schools an opportunity to meet the Mayor and attend the Council meeting here today. Other activities will be held throughout the week to celebrate. Visit the City’s Calendar of Events at www.stjohns.ca for more information; and WHEREAS: In recognition of National Child Day/World Children’s Day, all citizens are encouraged to wear blue on November 20 and to use the hashtag #NationalChildDay on social media to bring awareness of children’s rights around the world; and
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 20, as National Child Day in the City of St. John’s. National Housing Day: November 22, 2022WHEREAS: Since 1998, municipalities and other organizations across the nation have recognized National Housing Day on November 22nd. National Housing Day recognizes that having a safe, secure home is a basic human right and a key pathway out of poverty. It is important for all levels of government, organizations, and communities to work together to provide affordable and adequate housing that will make a real difference in the lives of many people who require shelter; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s has adopted a ten-year Affordable Housing Strategy to create solutions across the housing continuum. The strategy was developed and is being led by the Affordable Housing Working Group which includes representation from all levels of government, the community sector, and private industry; and WHEREAS: Communities across Canada are experiencing an affordable housing crisis that has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted contributing systemic affordability issues and resulted in economic turbulence; and WHEREAS: National Housing Day is meant to raise awareness about housing and homelessness and encourage events designed to focus on the needs of individual communities. This year a hybrid forum has been planned; and WHEREAS: This event will emphasize that housing is a basic human right, as recognized in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and enshrined into Canadian law in 2019, and that all housing policy, services, and initiatives should be rooted in this right;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim November 22nd as National Housing Day in the City of St. John’s. Economic Abuse Awareness Day: November 26, 2022WHEREAS: domestic economic abuse is a pattern of control, exploitation or sabotage of money, finances, and economic resources (car, food, education, transportation) which affects an individual’s capacity to acquire, use and maintain economic resources and threatens their economic security and self-sufficiency; and WHEREAS: a lack of access to economic resources undermines a woman’s independence, such as leaving abusive relationship, limiting her access to social support services, undermining mental and physical well-being, and exacerbating other risk factors contributing to homeless, generational trauma, and other forms of marginalization affecting women; and WHEREAS: women who experience economic abuse are five times more likely to experience physical and other forms of gender-based violence, and 99% of situations that include coercive control will lead to economic and financial abuse; and WHEREAS: economic abuse has severely impacted numerous generations of Canadians and continues to occur regardless of socioeconomic status, race, age, or other identity factors; and WHEREAS: it is of utmost importance that government, at all levels, take action to support survivors of financial and economic abuse.

Child Abuse Prevention Month October 2022WHEREAS: Children are the foundation for a prosperous and innovative society, and the foundation for a child’s growth and development is established when the community takes responsibility for creating healthy environments where our children can thrive; and WHEREAS: All children deserve to have a safe, stable, nurturing home and community to foster their healthy growth and development; and WHEREAS: Child abuse and neglect is an important societal concern that may affect the long-term health and wellbeing of not only children, but also the adults they become; and WHEREAS: Child abuse and neglect impacts our entire society and our society’s future; and WHEREAS: Child abuse prevention is a shared responsibility and finding solutions requires the involvement and collaboration of citizens, organizations, and government entities; and WHEREAS: This month, we emphasize the importance of understanding the devastating problem of child abuse and neglect and commit to learn more about the behavioral and physical signs of possible abuse.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October, as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the City of St. John’s. (October 11, 2022) Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)WHEREAS: A strong workforce is one, inclusive of the skills and talents of ALL Newfoundlanders and Labradorians; and WHEREAS: Supported Employment/ MentorAbility NL whose purpose is to celebrate the many and varied contributions of workers with disabilities and to recognize the leadership of inclusive employers who promote employment inclusion and educate Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about disability employment issues and the benefits of inclusion for all its citizens; and WHEREAS: the awareness of said benefits and the innumerable success stories of employment inclusion serve to positively promote inclusion of people with disabilities in the provincial workforce; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s is committed in our work to increase employment inclusion for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, through the provision of leadership, resources and ongoing opportunities for dialogue and engagement.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. (October 3, 2022) International Walk & Wheel to School MonthWHEREAS: The City of St. John’s recognizes that October is International Walk & Wheel to School Month (iWALK-iWHEEL). iWALK-iWHEEL gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of active transportation; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s Recreation Division has celebrated iWALK-iWHEEL for 13 years, and would like to continue to bring awareness to this event in our community; and WHEREAS: In recognition of iWALK-iWHEEL 2022, the City of St. John’s is encouraging all students in St. John’s to participate by walking or wheeling to school during the month of October. The City of St. John’s is supporting this initiative by encouraging schools to host school walks and providing brochures containing safe walking tips to distribute to students, and resource packages for teachers to encourage walking and wheeling to school. Furthermore, City of St. John’s After School Programs are participating by providing participants with the opportunity to walk and wheel after school; and WHEREAS: By walking and wheeling to and from school, students can experience firsthand how easy it is to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily lives;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 2022 as International Walk & Wheel to School Month in the City of St. John’s. (October 3, 2022) Energy Efficiency Week: October 1-7, 2022WHEREAS: takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro aimed at creating energy efficiency awareness and delivering programs that promote electricity savings to the residents of this province; and WHEREAS: Energy efficiency is important for the people of St. John’s and our whole province, as it helps reduce the demand on the electricity system and the impact on the environment, while helping homeowners and businesses save energy and money; and WHEREAS: Energy Efficiency Week 2022 is focused on providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with the information they need to save energy and money! Wrongful Convictions Day: October 2, 2022WHEREAS: Wrongful Conviction Day is designated as an annual International Day to recognize the tremendous personal, social, and legal costs associated with wrongful criminal convictions. This day recognizes those persons who have been forced to endure the tremendous consequences brought by a wrongful criminal conviction; and WHEREAS: The purpose of this day is to inform and educate the broader international community on the causes, consequences, and complications associated with wrongful criminal convictions. More information on the day can be found at: wrongfulconvictionday.com; and WHEREAS: It is important to raise awareness in order to work toward the prevention of further wrongful convictions. Proclaiming October 2nd as Wrongful Conviction Day can direct the public’s attention to this issue and generate support and understanding; and WHEREAS: Wrongful Conviction Day was spearheaded by the International Wrongful Conviction Day Committee and now many organizations are leading events in its honor. The committee is committed to raising awareness of and advocating against wrongful convictions globally.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim October 2nd, 2022, as Wrongful Convictions Day in the City of St. John’s. National Seniors Day and United Nations International Day of Older Persons: October 3, 2022WHEREAS communities across Canada have joined together on October 1 to recognize National Seniors Day and the United Nations International Day of Older Persons; and
WHEREAS C.A.R.P. NL, a participating organization of the Seniors Advisory Committee, is an advocate to ensure fair treatment for all seniors in an age friendly city; and, WHEREAS for 2022, the participating community and organizational representatives and the city staff of the Seniors Advisory Committee of the City of St. John’s have partnered to develop a program of activities to enable our older citizens to engage and recover from the pandemic isolation of the past two years; and WHEREAS the City of St. John’s today launched these week-long activities with a flag raising ceremony at 10 a.m. this morning, October 3, 2022;
THEREFORE I, Danny Breen, Mayor of the City of St. John’s, do hereby proclaim the week of October 3-7, 2022, as Seniors Week in the City of St. John’s and urge my fellow citizens to recognize the crucial role played by older Canadians in our community and our Province. Fire Prevention Week: October 9 to 15, 2022WHEREAS: the City of St. John’s is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city; and WHEREAS: fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at greatest risk to fire; and WHEREAS: cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and associated injuries are the third leading cause of home fire deaths; and WHEREAS: heating and electrical equipment and smoking materials are among the WHEREAS: working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half; and WHEREAS: City of St. John’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire deaths and injuries through prevention and protection education; and WHEREAS: St. John’s residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and WHEREAS: residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and WHEREAS: the Fire Prevention Week 2022 theme, “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.” effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim the week of October 9-15, 2022, as Fire Prevention Week in the City of St. John’s. I urge all the people of St. John’s to heed the important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2022 and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department’s Fire and Emergency Services. I call upon the people of the City of St. John’s to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work, and school and to take the steps needed to make their homes and families safe from the leading causes of home fires, which include cooking, heating and electrical. (October 3, 2022) International Day of the Girl: October 11, 2022WHEREAS: The United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl recognizing girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. WHEREAS: This day promotes girls’ empowerment and their human rights. Ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right but can help overcome the barriers girls face to a safe, educated, and healthy life. WHEREAS: If effectively supported during their adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as today and tomorrow’s workers, mothers, mentors, entrepreneurs, and political leaders. Whereas: We celebrate the achievements of young women, honour girls’ rights, and provide equal opportunities both in our workplaces and in society. WHEREAS: Today reminds us we must do everything we can to empower girls in our communities to bring about the change they want to see, and we must invest in them and their collective future as it benefits entire communities.
THEREFORE, I, Mayor Danny Breen, on behalf of the St. John’s City Council, do hereby proclaim October 11, 2022, as “International Day of the Girl” in the City of St. John’s. International Credit Union Day: October 20, 2022WHEREAS: credit unions are financial cooperatives, democratically owned and operated and founded by people working together toward economic advancement; and WHEREAS: credit unions embrace a “people-helping-people” philosophy that supports the growth of healthy, vibrant communities; and WHEREAS: credit unions have championed the idea that people from all walks of life should have access to affordable financial services offered by credit unions; and WHEREAS: credit unions empower people to improve their economic situations in 118 nations around the world as more than 86,000 credit unions that serve the financial needs of 375 million members, including NLCU in the City of St. John’s.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim that Thursday, October 20, 2022, as International Credit Union Day in the City of St. John’s and that all citizens recognize the many contributions credit unions have made to the communities in this province, and honor and express appreciation for the service and commitment of credit unions. (October 17, 2022) Canadian Down Syndrome Week: October 23 to 29, 2022WHEREAS: Canada has a diverse and dynamic population, rich in strengths, resources and abilities; and
WHEREAS: Fellow Canadians with Down syndrome, and their families, are members of our communities and are deeply committed to ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to grow, develop and succeed; and WHEREAS: Canadian Down Syndrome Week is a week of educational programming directed to ensuring all individuals with Down syndrome live complete and fulfilling lives, with public knowledge, awareness and appreciation of the strengths and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome;

Arthritis Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Community support has been critical throughout the Arthritis Society’s 74-year history, enabling the WHEREAS: Arthritis is not just arthritis. Arthritis is serious. It causes debilitating pain, restricts mobility and diminishes quality of life. Six million Canadians – 1 in 5 – live every day with the fire of arthritis and there is no cure. Without a greater spotlight on this growing issue, the number of Canadians with arthritis will rise to nine million by 2040; and WHEREAS: During Arthritis Awareness Month this September, we seek to raise voices and awareness, and we are encouraging everyone who lives with arthritis, and all those who know and love them, to fight the fire of arthritis; and WHEREAS: The Arthritis Society is a Canada’s national charity dedicated to extinguishing arthritis for good;
Childhood Cancer Awareness MonthWHEREAS: September is recognized around the world as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: Throughout the month of September, Candlelighters NL shares information about Childhood Cancer and how it affects families here in Newfoundland and Labrador; and WHEREAS: Throughout the month of September, Candlelighters NL advocates for awareness of childhood cancer by reaching out to municipalities across the province to sign a proclamation in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: By recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, it helps to raise awareness about childhood cancer, to remember the lives taken too soon, to stand with the families continuing to fight, and
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 2022, as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. (September 1, 2022) Childhood Cancer Care Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Childhood Cancer Canada supports children and their families through a variety of programs and support such as the Emergency Fund, Empower Packs, Survivorship Scholarships, the Benevolent Fund, and; WHEREAS: Since 2004, the Foundation has been the primary charitable funding partner of clinical trials and childhood cancer research for C17 Council (Children's Cancers & Blood Disorders), comprised of Canada's leading pediatric oncologists and hematologists; and WHEREAS: Childhood Cancer Canada also funds sequencing of hard-to-cure childhood cancers through the PROFYLE (Precision Oncology For Young People) program to identify new therapies that are tailored to each patient and to improve the outcomes in hard-to-cure childhood cancers; and WHEREAS: Childhood Cancer Canada is asking cities across Canada to make a Proclamation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September to raise awareness of this worthy cause;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. (September 1, 2022) Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness MonthWHEREAS: fasdNL is a pan-provincial organization working to educate, provide supports and resources, and raise awareness about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada; and WHEREAS: fasdNL is currently leading a three-year FASD prevention, awareness, training, and collaborative action project in the four Atlantic provinces; and WHEREAS: FASD is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is a lifelong disability. Individuals with FASD will experience some degree of challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills to reach their full potential. Everyone with FASD is unique and has areas of both strengths and challenges; and WHEREAS: September 9th marks international FASD day. This day is recognized around the world and is intended to build awareness about the condition and surrounding stigma within communities;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 9, 2022 as FASD Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. Ovarian Cancer Awareness MonthWHEREAS: Ovarian Cancer is the most fatal gynecological cancer in Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society estimates that close to 3100 women and girls of all ages will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2022 and that over half of these women and girls will not live to see 5 years; and WHEREAS: The WOMEN OF HOPE group was created in 2016 and now has over 2700 members worldwide. The group’s mandate is to offer support for affected women, their families and friends and to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer and encourage the TEAL movement; and WHEREAS: Early detection of the disease remains the best way to save lives, however there is no reliable screening test for Ovarian Cancer. Symptoms include abdominal pressure or bloating, digestive problems, excessive fatigue, frequent urination and changes in bowel habits; and
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 2022, as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the City of St. John’s. This month we recognize those who have died and offer support to those who continue to fight for their lives. (September 16, 2022) International Women in Cyber Day: September 1, 2022WHEREAS: We request the City of St. John’s proclaim September 1st, 2022, as International Women in Cyber Day; and WHEREAS: The Women CyberSecurity Society (WCS2 ) is a non-profit organization on a mission to advance and retain an increased representation of women and diversity in the cybersecurity workforce; and WHEREAS: In Canada, women make up for only ten percent of the cybersecurity workforce at the entry level and one percent at leadership levels; and WHEREAS: In Canada, fifty percent of women drop out of information technology careers within the first four years; and WHEREAS: Research has shown diversity is vital for new ideas, innovation, employee job satisfaction, employer profits, and industry advancement; and WHEREAS: Women and girls deserve a safe Internet experience and cybersecurity knowledge is needed to defend and protect against gender-based online violence and hate; and WHEREAS: An estimated 25,000 cybersecurity jobs are unfilled in Canada in 2022; and WHEREAS: Events will be organized to celebrate, raise awareness, and support women in cybersecurity; and WHEREAS: This assists in recruiting, retraining and retaining of women in the cybersecurity workforce. It demonstrates support and recognition, brings awareness to build sustainable solutions and sets aside a special day to celebrate;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 1st, 2022, as International Women in Cyber Day in the City of St. John’s. (September 1, 2022) National Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day: September 4, 2022WHEREAS: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) causes abnormal cysts to develop and grow in the kidneys and the enlargement of cysts causes kidney function to decline, it equally affects men, women, and children – regardless of geography or ethnic origin; and WHEREAS: the PKD Foundation of Canada is the only national charitable organization dedicated to fighting PKD, a progressive, life-threatening genetic disease, through programs of research, advocacy, education, support and awareness in order to discover vital treatments and a cure for PKD and improve the lives of all it affects; and WHEREAS: in September the Walk to end PKD will take place nationwide to honour PKD patients and their friends and families fundraising for clinical research and fellowships, which will benefit all PKD patients, THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 4th, 2022 as National Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day in the City of St. John’s. (September 4, 2022) National Forest Week: September 18-24, 2022WHEREAS: Canada’s forests are a valuable, renewable resource that contribute to our economy and the livelihoods of our communities; and WHEREAS: Canada’s forests play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, clean air and water and wildlife habitat whilst being an important aspect of climate change mitigation efforts; and WHEREAS: The City of St. John’s and its citizens rely on the surrounding forests for livelihood, health, and recreation; and WHEREAS: This annual one-week campaign with the theme of “Canada’s Forests: Solutions for a Changing Climate” will be celebrated across Canada by individuals and organizations;
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Danny Breen, do hereby proclaim September 18–24, 2022 as “NATIONAL FOREST WEEK” in the City of St. John’s. (september 18, 2022) National Tree Day: September 21, 2022WHEREAS: On September 21st, the City of St. John’s proposed that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS: The celebration, declared National Tree Day, will be recognized by the planting of trees in St. John’s; and WHEREAS: National Tree Day is now observed throughout the country; and WHEREAS: Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind, lower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS: Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products; and WHEREAS: Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS: Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal.
